@weepep The location of Derry Walls on the west bank played a big part in that decision.

Look at any map and its clear that Derry is both part of and indeed the capital of NW Ireland and inishowen in particular How unionists thought it was a good idea to cut us off from our Donegal family is their biggest mistake and one which will hasten the end of the putrid union

@PaulGosling1 FF and Micheál Martin in particular shafted the SDLP and it's hopes for a 32 county presence. Martin sacrificed that in his power play to thwart SF rather than take SF on on a 32 county level.

Someone else was making this point to me last week.
DMcGreevy@DavidMcGreevy4

@PaulGosling1 @SDLPlive @ClaireHanna IMHO, a large part of this is down to SDLP not engaging in 32 county politics. That has become a red line for many voters I believe. If you don't organise on a 32 county basis, you won't be considered come election time, regardless of the performance of individuals

@CaniceMcCarthy They should not have been deployed in ATCP role - They (if they had been needed) should have been tasked in aid to civil authority role & should never have been in line of sight of protestors - these are all facts Canice

It seems to becoming very clear that the Defence Forces were deeply uneasy about being ordered to turn on their own people. However the Garda Public Order Unit did so with gusto. It makes one wonder about the character of those being recruited into the Gardai.

@CalJamieson Apparently the Irish National Army had approximately 3000 ex British forces, 3000 new recruits and a couple of thousand of Civil War veterans. My grandfather and his brother were new recruits.

Very pleased to be in Helsinki this morning to meet Prime Minister @PetteriOrpo. Important discussions on competitiveness, the Multi-annual Financial Framework and our continued support for Ukraine ahead of Ireland’s presidency of the EU.

@MichaelMcI92861 @AnStreachailt The only thing Irish republicans are certain of is that those who made the supreme sacrifice would’ve been as divided as those who survived. By all means argue your corner but don’t divide our fallen dead in death what the British couldn’t do in life.

Using Bobby's image to promote a constitutional conference is absolutely abhorrent. Bobby had the opportunity in life to avail of the civic nationalist route with the SDLP through Sunningdale, but he didn't opt for it, instead he decided the best route for the Irish people was to join the IRA and engage in an armed struggle for a 32 county socialist republic. "Foremost in my tortured mind is the thought that there can never be peace in Ireland until the foreign, oppressive British presence is removed, leaving all the Irish people as a unit to control their own affairs and determine their own destinies as a sovereign people, free in mind and body, separate and distinct physically, culturally and economically."

It's like saying we will not invest in the armed forces despite being on the cusp of war cos the regiments disagree with the commander. It's pathetic. Training places are part of the vital infrastructure of a country. IMHO it should never be part of pay negotiations @wesstreeting

@PhilSmithIsBack @wesstreeting The only conclusion I can draw from everything that’s happening across the board in the NHS is the govt has decided training doctors is superfluous to future requirements. I predict that increasingly, if you want to see a doctor for your medical care, you’ll need to go private.

Playing Hungry Hungry Hippos with my son, but instead of playing the game he keeps trying to make sure all the hippos get a roughly equal number of marbles so the other ones aren't sad. Apparently I'm raising a Communist.

@angiebeeb It seems to me that the Irish government treats its citizens with total contempt when they pursue civil, natural justice whether The Stardust Families, Creeslough Families, Mica Families and the government owned ESB above. It is reminiscent of so called ‘special powers’ justice.

@PBresnihan The ‘two state solution’ is to Palestine what ‘reconciliation’ is to a border poll in Ireland. Meaningless sentiments that absolves him of doing anything meaningful in the mean time. Like passing the OTB in Palestine and preparing a White Paper wrt to a Border Poll.

'Enduring solidarity'. The most significant thing his Government has done for Palestine is endorse the IHRA definition of antisemitism, suppressing activism and speech critical of Israel and Zionism.
Micheál Martin@MichealMartinTD

Spoke with Palestinian PM Mustafa and expressed Ireland’s enduring solidarity with the Palestinian people. We agreed on the urgent need to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and rising settler violence in the West Bank. Only a two-state solution can bring lasting peace.

@itsjohncrotty It’s so political unionism to demand changes before a United Ireland is even in place. Changes that ‘not an inch’ political unionism has never discussed let alone implemented in the existence of the six counties.

1) It won’t be a new Ireland. It will be the same Ireland as it was before an undemocratic partition to suit an island minority 2) There is no ‘must’. I am all for a new flag, at least a discussion on it, but democracy rules 3) Changing flags because of perceived associations isn’t the norm. Otherwise every flag in the world would be changed every 25 years. And certain flags that flew over Empire would be long gone. 4) The harp on azure flag is a cracker. Chosen by French heralds as the first formal symbol to represent Ireland in 1260, it has incredible pedigree. Its adoption by English Kings in the 1400’s shouldn’t bother anyone, and we took it back for the Presidents flag. But it is NOT St Patrick’s blue, the made up colour of no historical pedigree. The blue harp flag has always been and is today the Harp on Azure x.com/itsjohncrotty/…

A privilege to launch 'Sean Lemass – the Lost Memoir' by Ronan McGreevy. By any measure, Seán Lemass is one of the great figures of independent Ireland. This book captures the intellect and vision of a truly remarkable man who laid the foundations for our modern state.
