@kovacsinstitute Hi Marc, does the wrist have to achieve 90° extension/layback and "lock in" position to hit a high level forehand? This is a hotly debated topic, "wrist lag" concept and it would be helpful and productive to get your professional opinion.

@poida I remember being fully impressed by the ingenuity in parking lots and being able to get a hot or cold coffee (can) from a vending machine in the middle of a rice field near my town- this is a whole other level. Wow!

@biomechstu Thanks Stuart, it’s an area of research that could benefit players and coaches, lots of controversy and confusion around “the role of the wrist”.

@poida Hi. I'm not too familiar with tennis research but from memory when we looked into overhead racket sports (tennis serve, badminton smash) there seemed to be an understandable difference depending on the methods used:

Interesting visual differences in this paper between: 1⃣ whole-group relationships 2⃣ individual relationships 3⃣ individual within-condition relationships So I decided to use WebPlotDigitizer (apps.automeris.io/wpd/) for the first time and have a play around (thread):

@biomechstu Hi Stuart, enjoying your research on tennis biomechanics, ie. Bruce Elliott’s presentation (I’ve met him, passionate researcher) There’s been much debate over the yrs around the role of the wrist in the forehand and joint angle on performance. Have you come across any research?

Within-condition interpretation (n = 1): Peak anterior-posterior ground reaction force does not explain the difference in ball speed between tennis forehand groundstrokes played at the same intended speed in this individual.
