This is a really dishonest comparison. Those states chose to dissolve. A nation obviously doesn’t violate its own right to exist by voluntarily dissolving. But Israel isn’t going to choose to dissolve, so when people deny Israel’s right to exist, what they mean is eradicating it.
Shadi Hamid@shadihamid

Czechoslovakia dissolved. The Soviet Union dissolved. Nobody speaks of their “right to exist” having been violated. No wrong was committed against them. They ceased to exist, and it wasn’t an injustice.

It’s not even just a dishonest comparison, it’s a stupid one. The difference between these situations is so obvious that the comparison has no persuasive force. You’d have to know nothing about the situations to think they’re analogous.

@chriswithans Cite the case in point to where it required Texas to redraw its entire congressional map, you lying little fuck.

Because Texas was in response to New York as well as necessary because of a court decision, which we’ve discussed ad nauseam. Texas also never had an independent commission. And finally, Texas is an R+14 state that drew a couple more red seats. Virginia is following California and drawing a 10-1 map that wouldn’t even be suitable for Maryland. It’s a D+5.7 state that just had a bipartisan moderate Republican governor who respected the will of voters. Voters went +33ish for an “independent commission” in 2020. Virginia’s New Democrat fakemajority is trying to gerrymander the state with a deceptively worded off-cycle referendum being held in April, so they’re not even getting the Real Voice of all voters. And they broke multiple laws to get that ballot measure, to boot.
S.V. Dáte@svdate

Why was Texas’ partisan, mid-decade redistricting okay but not Virginia’s?

It’s important to not indulge the idea that these are good faith arguments, and to emphasize, even as we rebut them, that they are lying.

There’s something especially insulting about people who will lie to your face. It’s really galling.

@chriswithans @norwalkiian The fact is that Democrats have supported gerrymandering reform and Republicans have opposed it for a long time, and Republicans only started hollering when Democrats began fighting back. No amount of dishonest, evasive non-sequiturs can change those facts.

@norwalkiian Democrats won’t even support voter ID. How would they support Real Redistricting?

@chriswithans @mike_frags All this excuse-making about how “wah, Texas was justified, it was forced to” only shows the excruciating contortions that produces in people. If a Democrat said something like this, you’d mock him viciously, and you’d be right.

@chriswithans @mike_frags The fact that Virginia had a commission is morally irrelevant. Likewise irrelevant is that Texas “only” drew four extra R seats. Once you open this box, you don’t get to decide where it stops. You can’t gripe that they went further when you went first.

A thing I learned a while back is that when your opponent does something bad, if you overreact, the judge will likely tone down his planned response. And if you underreact, a judge might very well amp it up. Being calm helps your client.

@PedroCo67443965 @glowehwurm @UrbanCourtyard You don’t understand: what you said sounds extremely stupid, he was giving you an opportunity to explain it. If you don’t want to explain your dumbass assertion, that’s fine, we’ll just take it at face value.
