Pairing phonemic awareness with letters improves outcomes! Small groups in K did a Heggerty medial sound isolation activity with the letters appearing. Then, they segmented sounds using manipulatives prior to spelling!

This small group in 1U worked on revising kernel sentences to include where + when phrases, adjectives/adverbs, and more specific word choice! We moved sentence parts around and tried out lots of options, making our sentences more complex! @DSteachlearn @ChickeringDover

Third graders in 3V “tasted” some book club books at the Starbooks cafe. Their orders are in and they’re excited about diving into their books! @ChickeringDover @DSteachlearn

We had to celebrate National Schwa Day! Schwa is an unexpected vowel sound, sounding like short u or i. It’s also the most common vowel sound in English. Schwa pops up in syllables that we don’t stress or emphasize when we speak.

Research partners in 5S are thinking about all they’ve learned about their research topics to generate “broad but distinct” main ideas for their writing - Lots of great conversations and collaboration between partners! @ChickeringDover @DSteachlearn

In 3V we wrote word equations and played “find the base” to think about how suffixes change the part of speech, spelling, and meaning of a base word. It was a fun way to review all we’ve learned in Fundations! @ChickeringDover @DSteachlearn

So many skills were woven into this small group in K today - phonemic awareness, phonics, concepts of print, conventions, handwriting, and vocabulary! On top of that, students practiced using tools and reflecting on and correcting their own work! @ChickeringDover @DSteachlearn

Students in 3W are learning from biographies! Students are pulling key events from the lives of the people they are reading about & thinking about the character traits they exhibit! @ChickeringDover @DSteachlearn

In 5A, students are asking and answering questions while reading nonfiction texts. It’s been especially powerful for students to ask, “What does the author assume we know?” and then apply strategies to figure out key vocabulary and concepts! @ChickeringDover @DSteachlearn

3V did a great job using a mentor sentence to understand noun phrases. Then, they applied what they learned by revising a sentence - check it out! 👏🏻 @ChickeringDover @DSteachlearn

2M is busy reading nonfiction texts! Students started by brainstorming what they know about a topic. Then, they connected on new information they learned from their books! @ChickeringDover @DSteachlearn

Ms Saunders shared this amazing book with her kindergartners this week! It’s the perfect book for sharing how sounds come together to make words 😲 and has a powerful message of community and friendship 🤩!! @ChickeringDover @DSteachlearn

Grade 5 students are paying close attention to situations when a “wiser” character gives another character advice - this could change a character’s actions, help lessen a problem, or reveal a lesson the author wants us to learn! @DSteachlearn @ChickeringDover

We’re boosting engagement during word study in 3V by doing a “pound it (word), tap it or pop it (sounds), and spell it” strategy for dictation. In a circle, we can provide differentiated scaffolding, feedback, & talk about word meanings! @ChickeringDover @DSteachlearn
