For most people, RTS began with Dune II (1992). But let's not forget some that came before. Among them were Populous, Powermonger, Mega-Lo-Mania and then also this little gem, Herzog Zwei (1989). Obviously, the scope of the game doesn't reach the levels that Dune II had, and for which it is rightfully considered the breakthrough for RTS games and their massive success in the 90s. But in terms of basic mechanics it had all the features that are still common in modern RTS games: 1) The goal is to destroy the enemy’s main base (you cannot damage it directly with your commander unit, only your produced units can). 2) Everything happens in real time with no turns or pauses; both players act simultaneously. 3) Units have simple behaviors/orders (e.g., patrol an area, guard a position, attack, capture a base). Once given orders, they operate autonomously until they run out of fuel or get destroyed. 4) Capturing outposts by dropping infantry generates income. Controlling more outposts means more money resulting in faster unit production and stronger economy. While none of this sounds mindblowing from today's perspective, for a 1989 game this was pretty epic.

PLANS TO CONVERT WATFORD CHURCH INTO MOSQUE REJECTED Watford Council has refused plans to convert a Grade II listed church into a mosque. The proposal would have turned the vacant Leavesden Road Baptist Church into a Muslim place of worship. Planning officers said the changes would cause “substantial harm” to the historic building, warning the proposals would remove or obscure much of the carefully designed and well-preserved interior. The application has now been rejected on heritage protection grounds. A small victory for Christianity.
