I don’t even want to see any key players starting this weekend against Espanyol. We’re 7 points clear at the top, so we can afford not just to rotate, but to rotate heavily. Lamine, Pedri, Olmo, Cancelo… all should be rested. You could even extend that to Kounde, Lewy, Eric, and Martin. There’s no reason to take risks when the priority is clearly the second leg. Give minutes to the others, Casadó can step in, Araújo as well, maybe give Espart another chance, Balde too. Gavi could start if he’s ready, and of course Roony. Those players are hungry for minutes and won’t even have the second leg in mind, so they’ll give everything they have for the Espanyol game. At the same time, you make sure the players who will start the second leg are in the best possible physical condition, fully rested, sharp, and ready to go.

Genuine question for the people saying Lamine dribbles too much, what exactly is he supposed to do to the 3, 4 or sometimes even 5 players constantly around him? Ask them politely to step aside so he can shoot or pass?

Another thing that makes me optimistic about the second leg is that Simeone is not good at protecting his lead. Yes, I know on paper what I’m saying doesn’t make sense since he’s a defensive coach and knows how to set up a low block, so he should be able to comfortably protect any lead he has by playing his favourite ‘park the bus’ football. However, the reality is that protecting a lead is more about balance. As the saying goes, ‘attack is the best form of defence’, if you don’t try to attack and instead try to protect your lead by just defending, you’re basically inviting pressure for the entire game and giving your opponent chances to get close and build momentum, which is exactly what Simeone always does. We’ve seen how he handled a 4-goal lead in the cup, and we’ve seen him bottle leads a lot of times before. Even at this stadium, as long as he has a lead, he will still go for that passive/cautious mentality and that could play into our hands.
