Not merging the Ordinals BIP is a mistake. The BIP process is supposed to document ecosystem conventions, not gatekeep them. If widely deployed standards can't be specified as BIPs, developers are left guessing when the process even applies. The cost of that ambiguity is high. For the microscopic benefit of excluding a single proposal the editors believe should not be a BIP, we risk discouraging future contributions. Fewer things that should be BIPs will likely become BIPs. Immediately, I am now considering not submitting some in flight work of mine as a BIP.

@kanzure @xstoicunicornx The more you tweet, the more you fit this definition. As one open-source dev to another, you should really find a different profession. Maybe focus on your designer babies, playing God seems what you like to do.
raph@raphjaph

@kanzure You should provide your reasoning for closing. This reads like a decree from a capricious petty tyrant.

No one is entitled to space in the BIP repository, people can create their own documents and have.

@jonatack You really shouldn’t be touting your performance in these threads. It’s not a good look when a BIP editor can’t even provide clear reasoning for closing a BIP PR that has been going through active revisions for over 3 years.

@rot13maxi @jonatack @kanzure @rodarmor I know, it wasn’t event worth pointing out because that guy just likes to use misdirection when he’s losing an argument.

BIP editors @jonatack and @kanzure were incapable of telling me the reason for closing the Ordinals BIP. Maybe the other editors could help them out and enlighten us why and how this decision was made.

@jonatack @kanzure @rodarmor You're deflecting again. If you can't handle twitter then at least provide the reasons on the BIP PR on github. Otherwise you're just proving that the BIP process is unaccountable and can't even follow it's own rules.

Sorry for being inflammatory today. I don’t like being so negative on the TL. But Bitcoin core devs and BIP editors have proven that the only thing they respond to is flame wars (ex: @nic_carter & quantum, knots guys & BIP-110) They have created this dynamic themselves.

@jonatack @kanzure @rodarmor You're deflecting, just tell us the reasons... If it really just is "I don't like it" like @kanzure so be it. At least we then all know how you guys reason and think.

The reasons, no matter how valid, are often unacceptable to the supporters. I gave reasons for closing the Cat PR. Didn’t matter. Some will still screenshot, troll and grandstand over it. In this case, there was more group discussion than most would want to read and it would only be used for more trolling. One day, one camp is angry with you. Another day, it’s the opposing one. Another day, it’s a third one. It’s the nature of the thing.

@kanzure @jonatack @rodarmor They can be closed but should provide a clear reason for doing so, otherwise the whole BIP process comes off as capricious. That specific PR has gone through many rounds of revision and even had tacit acknowlegment from previous BIP editors.

@raphjaph @jonatack @rodarmor Oh, BIP PRs can't be closed? You're quoting the closed state for an actual Bitcoin improvement proposal not for a pull request to submit to the repository. One of us is confused.

@kanzure @jonatack You're saying a lot of words but it seems like the ultimate reason was that you don't like it. @rodarmor has consistently provided feedback and updates. You closing this PR is a clear violation of the BIP-3 process

@raphjaph @jonatack I made the decision to close the pull request. The reason why is because I wanted to clean up the open pull requests. This one had been open for 3 years. I also don't want that BIP in that repository.

Hey Ordinals fam @kanzure just closed the proposal and refused to assign ordinals a BIP number! But the BIP 110 did in 3 months! WTH? What’s your reason Kanzure? @rodarmor even submitted the ordinals BIP almost 2 years ago.

Reckoned someone would say that. That wasn't the determining point. Each BIP is evaluated separately. BIP444/110 didn't have it easy either, and came close to being closed as well. I didn't see the "attack the Bitcoin network" ordinals post until just now. It doesn't encourage one to see ordinals as an improvement to bitcoin. They also not do need to be a BIP to exist as they already do. x.com/LeonidasNFT/st…

The editors discussed it periodically, without anyone feeling strongly enough to close or assign it. Good arguments can be made for either action, though while steelmanning it, more points and editors tended toward closing. Finally, in both BIPs 2 and 3, the more conservative option is preferred. github.com/bitcoin/bips/c…

@AgiRabbithole @kanzure Sure, it’s just concerning to see that people like @kanzure are in control of the BIP process and can’t even provide clear reasoning for the decisions they make.

I have closed the Ordinals BIP pull request. If you are interested, then you can still read the Ordinals BIP in the Ordinals git repository, I think. Don't worry, this isn't a "delete" action or anything - Ordinals still exists & I'm unable to destroy it even if I wanted to btw.
