@rsyncnet “680 GB Minimum Order”. How come there isn’t a lower tier, say 100 GB?

Get. Off. My. Lawn. We don't have an app. Our API is called POSIX. There's no web interface. rsync.net is an empty UNIX filesystem you access with SSH tools. Not sure what this means ? Our cloud storage is NOT for you. (discounts for .edu / nonprofit)

@MichaelCade1 Can you point Kopia to a plain old SFTP endpoint ? Genuinely interested ...

@GlibGoat No, that's the point - if your primary is on the coast, the backup should be in Denver :)

@rsyncnet Hey, your locations page seems to be unsure if Denver is on the west coast :)

@GnupertTBear You can create/maintain hard links with 'cp -al', etc. HOWEVER, we encourage you to stop using old-style "rsync snapshots" and just use our ZFS snapshots. You can do a "dumb mirror" to us and we create and maintain the snapshots for you. Bonus: they are immutable / read-only.

@GlibGoat Yes, that is correct - you can create outbound connections as you see fit to arbitrary ports ... you just can't listen on anything but SSH on TCP 22.

@rsyncnet Just to confirm, that's inbound only on TCP 22 correct? Is outbound limited at all? If not, our product creates a new virtual NIC, and uses that outbound to connect back to us (and allows us to access over a private site-to-site VPN essentially). Would that work, or not really?

@rsyncnet Do you by any chance allow installation of software on the ZFS VM's you provision? I.e. if we utilise stuff like Tailscale, or Zerotier for access, and have no publicly exposed ports, is this supported? Or is the installation of such software not allowed?

@rsyncnet I got around this by using twilio iot sims and cheap phones to build “pagers” :^)

@twilio @twiliohelp Most of our programmable messaging is sending SMS to ourselves. We are sending alerts and intra-company messages between people who know each other personally (or are machines that we own). So why can't we bypass A2P 10DLC by proving number ownership ?

Bottom Line: I can't spam numbers that I control. If I prove control of a number or email I should be able to send messages to it without ANY of the bullshit. (Yes - registering a US corporation and obtaining an EIN so my home server can send an alert to MYSELF is bullshit).

While we're at it: This challenge/response workflow applies to email: you could FINALLY add the email twiml verb. CC'ing SMS to an email is a complicated and fragile multi-API abomination with sendgrid and there is no reason for it if I control the recipient address.

@LambrosPetrou This is live, random access storage - not nearline or archival storage. That being said, the platform is not designed for client service. You can build a recipe to make it work that way, certainly, but that's not the design. Email us and we will give you test IPs, logins, etc.

I would like to periodically write a few files (each being 1GB JSON) from one of the servers, and then the rest fetching them down every 10-30s using `rsync`. Is the latency of the filesystem in milliseconds (to first byte) or is it slower, mostly for backup purposes?

@rsyncnet I am thinking in using rsync.net for a new project I am doing in order to share files across multiple servers (3-5 for now). Assuming that the servers are in the same region, e.g. Europe, as the filesystem, what kind of latencies should I expect?

@FuAnTaJi We asked for permission from BOTH the original author of rsync AND the maintainer at the time. This was in 2005.

@timcortesi Email us to discuss discounts for quantity and term as well as very generous .edu / non-profit rates. Also a good moment to remind folks that @debian.org and @freebsd.org team members get free lifetime accounts for any purpose they see fit.

@rsyncnet Looks like pricing is around $10 - $15 per TB per month, or around double the price of Google Drive storage, and close to half the price of AWS S3.
