35 odi average in 1990s cricket would extrapolate to 55+ average by today's lenient bowling and fielding standards.. because in that era teams could successfully defend even 200 runs in a 50 over format by good bowling,nowadays we see 200+ not even safe in 20 over format due to diluted bowling standards.. check the west indies vs australia 1996 wc semifinal match as an example.. how one spell by warne changed the sureshot win game with just 208 runs to defend and windies comfortable at 160/3 midgame,they lost last 8 wickets yet failed to score last 40 runs . In that era of peak bowling diversity,35 was good enough.. but where i feel de silva underperformed compared to his real potential is his test average,he should have remained in the 48-50 test average block as against his career final stat of 43 test avg. But again,a 43 test average in 1990s would be the equivalent of 55+ average in today's standards of the game,thus u lockdown kiddos will never know what u missed😇
