I'll engage in good faith. AI can be a great tool for the process of creating art, but I have to disagree about the person behind it being called an artist. There's a vision behind the prompts, but I believe it's more akin to someone commissioning an artist to do the work due to a lack of time, skill, or whatever. The client who commissions work cannot be rightfully considered the artist behind the artwork they commissioned. No one who has ever commissioned me claimed that they were the artist, but thanked me for being the artist who helped their vision come to life. It would be unethical for them to claim the art I made as the work of their own hands. Likewise, one can't claim to be the artist behind something done by generative AI unless the AI is literally tweaking something that the user has already created. If I used AI to animate my original drawings, it'd be way more appropriate to call me the artist than someone who spends a few minutes typing a prompt and clicking "regenerate" a few times. They're commissioning AI to create using a database of scanned artwork that the user has no right to claim as their work. I personally can see the use of AI to help with certain process tasks in the creation of a larger project, or even as a way to make a quick "proof of concept" for an idea. Wonderful tool if used properly, but insulting & myopic to be used to claim one has art skills.
