Hi friends. Elon chased me away from Twitter but I hear that people are going to Bluesky now, which seems easier to figure out than some other options. If you see this and have a code I can use, and/or want to connect there, please let me know. I miss many of you!

@Sakiera_Hudson (2) Sometimes reviewers say "this isn't clear" when they mean "I disagree" (or even "I feel personally threatened by this paper"). Might not be what's going on with all the feedback but might also help to pre-address responses that people might have to your paper.

Does anyone have tips on how to increase the clarity of your writing (that doesn’t require friends to read a gazillion drafts)? That’s my biggest rationale in rejections, that I’m not clear. The ideas are there but they are not translating. I truly want to be a better writer!

@Sakiera_Hudson Skimmed replies below & two additional thoughts: (1) "explain to grandma" (also something Jim said, appreciate that trip down memory lane) - why use representation of an older woman? I mean, I know why, but maybe explain to young male policymakers or undergrads or something.

I learned at #PMENA44 during an NSF session that we can just ask PIs for copies of their awarded proposals, so I'm just putting this out there. I'm interested in applying for an @NSF CAREER grant with an idea I have. Would anyone be willing to share a copy of their proposal?

@kaitlynmwerner Congrats on the interview! For motivation, I give myself rewards (draft talk, read a chapter of a novel, revise talk, watch Top Chef episode, etc.). I also don't work on Sundays, not for this reason, but it helps with motivation as a side benefit. Good luck!

How do people stay motivated near the end of a job market cycle? I’m so freaking exhausted and feel my performance starting to slip, but I still need to finish a super important grant and prepare for an interview (among other things). Any advice and/or good vibes appreciated.

My social cognition course uses low voting rates among young people as an example of social loafing. Rates this election still far below what I think is ideal but I am glad to need to update that example.

Reading reviews can physically make me sick. And then I realize just how much self-worth is attached to my writing and my papers even when I don't want it to be. How does one detach self-esteem from the process? Does anything work beyond "get more rejections to get used to it?"

@wgervais Seems like people could also be privatizing their religion. Still believe but no longer want to be affiliated with places of worship, perhaps bc their own views are more progressive than the institution is.

@dsbarra 1.5 hrs once a week w/ everyone incl. RAs. Each grad student, post-doc, lab manager is responsible for 1 week. Can use however is most helpful - feedback on talk, workshopping manuscript, etc. Plus 1 professional dev session for RAs + a few external speakers.

How do people run their lab meetings? For the last few years, we've run ours as mini-class & weekly journal club: covering a few topics over the course of the semester (e.g., 3 weeks on power, 3 weeks on professional devel. topics, 3 weeks on new empirical findings). Other ideas?
