A good take I’ve come to agree with recently is that Trump is using Musk - and Musk doesn’t see it. He thinks he’s shaping the narrative. In reality, he is the narrative tool. Musk fits perfectly: the "disruptor", the cultural battering ram, the symbol of 1776 chaos. No office. No oversight. Just influence. Easy to weaponize, easier to discard. And Trump’s done this before - repeatedly. Michael Cohen. Rudy Giuliani. Steve Bannon. Even Mike Pence. Each served a purpose - legal shield, populist voice, ideological architect, loyal second-in-command. All discarded once they became liabilities. Trump doesn’t keep people. He uses them for leverage, then throws them under the bus when pressure builds. Trump’s deeper play isn’t just about power - it’s structural. Splitting America the nation (emotional, tribal, rebellious) from America the republic (institutional, legal, restrained). Musk fits the former perfectly. But he’s not a co-architect of this plan—he’s the fall guy. Wouldn't be surprised if history remembers Musk not as the disruptor who saved democracy - but the genius who got played.
