What is the point of a debating and politics society if it refuses to debate politics? We are facing a systemic crisis of free speech and academic freedom on university campuses: students ostracised for lawful views, academics hounded out of jobs, and visiting speakers silenced. The Free Speech Union is proud to support students standing up for free speech. The Debating and Politics Society at Bangor University has serious questions to answer.

I’m very Peter Hitchens when it comes to New Year’s Eve, it’s not something I’m particularly fussed about. Yet, for the first time in a long, long while, I’m watching the London fireworks on the BBC. And, well… it is hilariously Khan-esque. Music and images are being superimposed onto the fireworks themselves. We’ve had a menagerie of world flags projected onto the London Eye, with voiceovers telling us that Englishness is all about cups of tea, Caribbean barbers, Muslim lollypop ladies, and so on. Then, of course, there’s the hideous, outdated twee pop music and the obligatory nods to The Sport. It’s depressing; but done in such an absurdly awful way that it’s making me laugh. Now we have Mayor Khan’s voice declaring that London is “for everyone,” set to the tune of Coldplay. Pure Yookay.

Helping with that is my priority. "But at this time of the year, which celebrates love and abundance, loss or hardship can feel even more acute. So call around to a neighbour. Check in on a friend or a relative who you haven't heard from for a while. Reach out. It can make a huge difference. "That is what Christmas is about. So whether you're at home this evening, heading to work, heading to church, or maybe heading to the pub, let's look forward and celebrate the joy and hope that Christmas brings. "From my family to yours. To everyone in the United Kingdom. I hope you all have a very happy Christmas"
