A thread on the 50 best fortifications to go and visit in the world according to me. They are all fun for at least one in the family. They are listed in reverse rank order as determined by how much fun, unique and awesome they are.

@ariehkovler We do it with cocoa powder (even just something simple such as Nesquik) and call it a 'cacao snail'. The ones sold in pastry shops are often larger, house-made ones usually look just like yours.

@kamilkazani Yes, but to say that people who were included in this order were all nazis is of course an over-simplification (anti-Communist yes though).

@archer_rs Where I live we were specifically taught not to indicate when entering, only on exit, but tbf double lane roundabouts were not really a thing then.

@alicesalisburyj A drone can indeed do all of those and will automatically dust off the shelves while it changes the lightbulb, but you'll need a new set of propeller blades after the hedge trimming. Speaking from experience.

@Miyhnea I think it is hard to convey that besides everything else how stupid, hopelessly, mind-destroyingly and soul-crushingly stupid such a regime was.

@waitbutwhy This end result is incredibly depressing, I kind of hope most respondents were American and that there are less than 42% of psychopaths amongst online people everywhere else.

So the Assisted Dying Bill has quietly been put out of its misery after a long period of suffering. And now people are upset about that, and think it was wrongly killed?

@FondOfBeetles @alexmassie It's practically the only thing I could confidently prepare for other people as well, I don't think anything could be more simple that you can still call cooking or preparing a meal.

@alexmassie I’m not saying scrambled eggs need to be restaurant-level, but they are pretty hard to mess up in terms of functional eating?

Several friends and colleagues I have spoken to suggested that JD Vance’s visit to Budapest in the run-up to the Hungarian parliamentary elections not only failed to help Fidesz, but may even have harmed its public support. 1/5

@thinkingwest This is way off and Inguess includes every single known archaeological site where there was some kind of fortificafion from the Bronze Age onwards. (This is certainly the case with Hungary, I know for a fact you would find nothing at 90+% of these red dots.)

@ChristopherJM I wonder when this culture change took place, I read years ago by a Hungarian journalist from Zakarpatia who served in the late Soviet Red Army in the 1980s that beatings, humiliation etc. were viewed the same way as in any other modern army, so practically taboo.

“It was like the Middle Ages. They beat people with sticks. Their hands were pounded with hammers. They were handcuffed to radiators. They were deprived of water. They were thrown naked into pits,” Bykov said.

English version of our most recent story about yet another Russian defector from the Mulino training range, who revealed a systematic culture of sadism and sexual abuse in one of the exemplary Russian artillery brigades. Thank you, @Mike_Eckel. rferl.org/a/russia-ukrai…
