We should return back to basics. We should return back to cooking simple Indian food. So many youngsters find Indian recipes complex. They are ok to cook pasta and can even make pizzas and bake cakes or cookies. But ask them to make Indian food and they wince. Why?? Why the mental block?? -------------------------------- It was not like this. Our ancestors cooked simple meals. They couldn't afford many ingredients due to lack of money and most importantly they didn't have time or energy to cook elaborate meals. This was true atleast of my grandparents who lived in 2 small villages of Telangana. In arranged marriages previously, women were judged on how well they could milk a cow, make cowdung patties, carry water in a pot or how well they could do farm work. I don't think they were judged on how well they could cook elaborate meals everyday. Around 4-5 decades back, as people started moving more to the towns and the fact that women were free from the farm work, they found spare time on their hands. -------------------------------- With easy availability of refined oil and increasing financial ability, everyone became a MasterChef. Recipes started becoming more complex. It boggles even my mind. The same brinjal curry can be made simply within 15 minutes or elaborately. Women now were judged on the ability to cook and serve elaborate meals for their families. Mothers cooked yummy dishes day in and day out and sons grew up on those. They wanted the same from their wives. Wives learnt. They slogged. Then reality hit them. They resented the work. They didn't want their daughters to face the same. They encouraged their daughters to study well and take up jobs. -------------------------------- Younger generation women saw the mothers slogging in the kitchen. They studied with a vengence and have soared high in the professional field. Their studies, their work didn't leave much time for women to learn the elaborate Indian cooking. With earning power, women lost the interest to cook as well. Their reasoning "why should we ALONE cook when we earn as much as the males?". The fear was real. They didn't want to slog like their mothers. Whatever it is, we have now come to a situation where women don't want to cook. Or don't know to cook. Men don't know to cook either. But both still eat Indian food as they are brought up on those. They depend on Swiggy and zomato now for the same. Eating out has become the norm. End result: increasing diabetes, obesity and a host of other metabolic issues in both males and females. Not everyone can afford a cook. -------------------------------- The solution: Go back to basics. Indian food can be as simple and as complex as one can prepare. Learn simple recipes. One pot recipes. Give due attention to a balanced meal - protein, carbs, good fats, fibre. This can be made in half an hour if vegetables can be cut the previous evening. Both males and females, both boys and girls, everyone should learn cooking. This is the only way out from this metabolic disease mess that we are currently facing. #cooking #diabetes #obesity
