@teachmaths

I am a mathematics teacher who loves good ideas for rich, engaging mathematics lessons! I love some other things too, but maths ed is mostly what I tweet about.

I do a wee thing to memorialize mathematicians and math educators we've lost each year. Usually famous folks, but wonder if you've lost a math teacher, mathematician or math educator? Share something about them with me and I'll try to memorialize them. Or just boost your story.

This week! From chapter 2 about cones! With a given piece of paper/card, who can make the cone with the biggest volume ? So much goes on here… should it be short and fat or tall and skinny? Is making the cone with the biggest volume the same as making sure you use as much 1/2

Of the card as possible? How can I fit the base and the other bit on the same piece of paper? What shape is the other bit? Always rewarding and sets us up well for following work problem. Solving with mensuration of cones. Lots of variations for all ages…. 2/3

Today in the #MLCUoA some students asked why the formula for the sum of the first n squares was 1/6 n(n+1)(2n+1). I said there ought to be a geometrical reason, and ran to get the Cuisenaire rods. Here is a recreation of what we figured out on the fly.

@teachmaths @Simon_Gregg Personally I simply give them the circles and a pile of the number counters, and sit back with a smile on my face and see what happens. All sorts of ideas - of which your is one - may crop up, and many of them might never occur to me.
