If I’m understanding the WNBA players vote correctly, they did not rank Caitlin Clark 9th. Many of the players did not rank her in the top 4 based off her play THIS SEASON — which is valid. Fever have played 16 games. She’s missed half of those games with injuries (including tonight’s Commissioner Cup championship against Minnesota). She’s also averaging a league high 6 turnovers a game, shooting 29 percent from three and 39 percent from the field. Let’s just be real — those aren’t All Star numbers by any objective measure. But popularity drives All Star games (I’m old enough to remember when Yao Ming kept being voted a AS starter over Shaq). I have zero problem with CC being an AS because she’s who millions of fans want to see. Still a great player, but no she has not had a great season. But the players are judging her by what they’ve seen from her this season and I don’t think it’s all that crazy or controversial to look at her stats and see why they came to that conclusion. But I get it, some of y’all just want to drive the jealous Black women taking down a darling white woman narrative no matter what — even though Paige Bueckers and Sabrina Ionescu were both voted in the top 4.

RGIII saying he could recognize “hate when ‘he’ see(s) it”, when referring to Angel Reese’s feelings toward Caitlin Clark was irresponsible, but not at all surprising. Clark’s the biggest star in women’s basketball, & deservedly so. No need to beat up Reese to add shine to it. RGIII plays into the narrative that Reese is the villain of Clark’s hero origin story. Now, Oberman & Portnoy, who berated Reese in college, have an ally in Griffin. Add him to the list of black men who’ve adopted the corny trend of denigrating black women to affirm their choices.
