Oh no... a perfectly good effort gone to waste! That "highest bidder" bit I threw in so as to stick to the point without sidetracking into the process of a contract and methods of sale ended up confusing the one persona whose capacity for thought can be equated to that of a fruit fly. Oil is sold through futures contracts (to the highest qualified bid at time of offering), or spot (to the highest qualified bid at time of offering), or through brokers (whose job it is to get the highest qualified bid at time of offering). In reality, oil is sold through commodity markets, in which buyers and sellers are connected based on the highest qualified bid at time of offering. But you are right - oil companies do not set the price of oil directly in the open market. And because I never said precisely that, in a series of words deemed necessary by you, I must not know anything about the things I did say.

Insane way of portraying how much oil each country produces. Numbers and "heights" are shocking. If you look at the top 3, you start to understand who benefits most from this war 🇺🇸U.S over 20M 🇸🇦Saudi over 11M (cannot 100% export atm) 🇷🇺Russia over 10M

Common misconception leads to this question. When the print says the US produces 20 million barrels per day, the natural thought is that its citizens have some entitlement to that oil, or benefit from its production on their soil. They don't. The oil companies that own the fields and extract the oil own the oil they've extracted. It does not belong to the country, but rather to the owners of the company. And they will sell to the highest bidder... always. So, if Exxon can sell that oil for $100/barrel to China or India, and the demand exists to conduct that sale, then Exxon would be doing a disservice to its shareholders if they sold it for less than that to a distributor in the US simply so that US citizens get a break on local costs. Bottom line is, as a citizen, you don't own that oil and therefore aren't entitled to any benefits from it being produced in the US. If, however, you consider socialism a good thing, then you might want your government to nationalize production like they do in the Middle East, which would then translate to lower prices within your country. Your alternative, is to buy shares in those companies so that you can reap the benefits of those highly profitable sales.

@MarioNawfal If that is true, why do we need to get other people’s oil, and why is the cost of oil so expensive? We should be making our own and setting our own price. What am I missing?

The delusion is in the belief that the average citizen has a claim on that oil and that somehow, the capitalism they tout will see fit to release corporate profit to the individual household. Does Exxon pay dividends to the average American? If not, then what makes the separatist think he’s going to see the benefit of that separation in his pocketbook?

TDS is real but so is TCS (Trump Cult Syndrome) where extremely gullible sycophants believe everything he does is great despite the overwhelming evidence it is some combination of dumb, corrupt and even evil, e.g., everything Iran and Israel. I voted for Trump but he will lead the GOP to a bigly defeat in the midterms.

How would having more oil production translate to retail price relief for consumers? For the investors, no doubt there is some lost opportunity here. The only way this could possibly be an opportunity missed for retail benefit would be if the oil extraction and refining were all done here and were nationalized to a large degree. Like in the Middle East. Then the government could use those profits to offset taxes and possibly offer attractive gasoline at home.

😩 $100 to put gas in my tank and it’s not even full. Canada holds the world's third-largest oil reserves and is the world’s fourth largest oil producer yet somehow we’re not ‘energy independent’ enough to dodge these global spikes. 🤷‍♀️

Oil prices are set internationally. It doesn’t matter where it’s produced, if oil prices go up, the cost of everything goes up. Trump’s narrative is that the US produces oil so they don’t need it from the Middle East. However, that doesn’t stop the price of gas going up in the US. What you’re asking for would only result in the oil companies making more money. It would not translate to lower gas prices for Canadians.

The only reason it needs to be secured is if the oil is bought in USD. The countries you mentioned could, if the US were simply to leave, continue to safely purchase their oil and satisfy their energy needs. This is the reason why no one wants to join hands with the US - the demand is not to protect the strait, but rather to secure the petrodollar. From that lens, participation simply isn't necessary. The US doesn't need the oil, true. They do, however, need the petrodollar to survive.

President Trump is spot on why should America keep babysitting the Strait of Hormuz when we've already crushed the Iranian regime militarily and economically? Let the oil dependent nations (China, Europe, India, etc.) who actually need that passage step up and secure it themselves. No more free rides on U.S. blood and treasure while "allies" sit on their hands. Time to force some real burden sharing and get them moving fast! 💪🇺🇸 #AmericaFirst #IranDefeated

Do you simply not make room for the possibility that, under leadership of any kind some people's lives will improve while others will decline, or that at varying times in our lives we will all... each of us singly and often collectively, be wrong about something? Under Trudeau I saw my quality of life deteriorate. My home got more expensive to maintain and my income did not rise quickly enough to manage my expenses. Canada was laughed at, and relationships with some of the world's most rapidly growing economies soured. China, India, The UAE, Saudi Arabia all had issue with us under his leadership. My neighbourhood changed to reflect the darker side of a significant immigration problem and the resources supposedly available to protect me seemed to be spreading thin. To that end, I voted conservative and we lost. As a Canadian first, I opted to accept the result and accepted Carney as the new representative of my country. I opted to offer the benefit of doubt rather than stubbornly cling to my biases. Under Carney I see Canada taking a leadership position internationally. With the exception of Trump (who trolls anyone not offering him title and reverence), most leaders look favourably on Canada today and speak highly of our new PM. I don't know if this will translate to eventual business and growth for Canadians, but I appreciate that he is making an effort that at the least creates possibilities for those rewards. I see that there is a calm effort toward reducing dependence on the goodwill of any single client relationship in order to allow or our own sustainability. While difficult, this is a good step to make given the harsh lessons we've just been taught. I see an immigration problem that seems to be settling. There haven't been any new faces on my street for some time and the neighbourhood seems to be smiling through its struggles again. We work hard and deserve the reward of our homes starting to feel like homes. I expect times to be difficult for a while. We're in a necessary recession that will eventually pass. Under Carney, I see us being a stronger, better positioned Canada on the other side of it.

When the popularity of Carney keeps going up while at the same time the Country keeps declining there’s a problem. The only way that’s accomplished is through North Korean level propaganda being used against the nation. Dear leader is great, pay no attention to your standard of living, overreaching policies, no employment, record job loss, record crime & massive debt.

These are sad times indeed. In a world of billions there is likely to be some conflict at all times. This is normal and human. We're not all going to get along all the time. However, if we want to stay the best version of ourselves, we must be willing to see past our fears and always be willing to demand better from ourselves than those we counter with - for as long as is sustainable. We must choose violence only as a last resort, and be exhaustingly curious of possible alternatives when we feel safety in making that choice. Decisions borne from fear tend not to take us to better places.

The trap. Right. So the plan was: start a war without consulting your allies, demand they send ships, and when they decline, declare victory because you’ve proven you don’t need them. Most people call that burning your alliances down and then claiming you meant to do it. This is the most consequential moment in transatlantic relations since 1945. And America has chosen to side with Russia. Let that land. In the greatest security crisis of the postwar era, the United States has aligned itself with the country that European democracies have spent eighty years building a defensive alliance against. Hitler had useful idiots too. History has a name for that choice. Trump has spent his presidency helping Putin, abandoning allies, and now declaring that Europe is the enemy for refusing to fight a war it was never consulted on. The transatlantic relationship is not strained. It is over. Europe knows it. The foreign ministries in Berlin, Paris and Warsaw are not writing angry cables. They are writing hundred-year plans. Those plans point east. China. India. New trade architecture. New security partnerships. New defence procurement that will not route a single euro through Lockheed Martin or Raytheon. The American defence industry is looking at trillions in lost European orders, and they can thank the man who has declared their best customers freeloaders. This is the legacy of a man who bankrupted six casinos. Six. A casino exists to take money from people who walk through the door. He still lost. And now he is applying the same judgment to the most powerful alliance in human history. Europe is not falling into a trap. Europe is leaving the building.
