What I wanted to say at the #gameawards (1/16)

This year’s The Game Awards is an embarrassing indictment of a segment of the industry desperate for validation via star power with little respect for the devs it’s supposedly honoring.

so what's it like working in the game industry I'm often asked. If I had to choose 1 word I would say it's – 𝗰𝗿𝘂𝗲𝗹 🧵 It can be cruel on both sides, among players and developers. cruel because behind so much glamour in ceremonies like tonight's #gameawards where some are toasting over a big win, collab announcement or game reveal, there are literally thousands of people who have either lost their jobs or who are actively afraid to loose their jobs because that's just how things are 🙃 cruel among developers because we willingly let ourselves believe that the pixels that we put on a screen have more value than the dinner with our family that we missed all for trying to meet a deadline. cruel from players because they don't care about the '𝘩𝘰𝘸', they only care about the '𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵' and the '𝘯𝘰𝘸' and are prepared to give us but a fraction of their attention for which the industry spends billions of dollars trying to secure. so why the hell would people actually sign up for these jobs? 🤷🏼 there's plenty to do out there to earn a living and still come home at a reasonable time — well that my friends is the biggest most ironic cruelty of all: 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆! 🎮 so you see, the cycle will never actually break because as long as there are people willing to play our games, you can be sure that there will be a passionate team out there working late into the night thinking about the next big thing, the next fancy mechanic, the next level design or the next cool animation to wow the audience – because the thrill of creation is simply too addicting and while I wish sometimes things were a bit easier, as long as people love playing games, developers will love making them 🥲 have a good night. _moy
