♣️ Jokic & MJ ♦️ GOATs
1. Awards and accolades overwhelmingly favor MJ • All-Defensive Team selections: MJ was selected 9 times (all First Team) vs LeBron’s 6 times (5 First Team + 1 Second Team). Moreover, LeBron only earned those 6 selections across his 23-year career. • Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY): MJ won it once (1988) vs LeBron zero times. • Steals Leader: MJ led the league 3 times vs LeBron zero times.
These awards alone make it clear that, in terms of league-wide recognition, MJ was regarded as the superior defender. Claiming LeBron is better when he has never even won DPOY is simply ridiculous. 2. “Versatile — can guard 1-5”
This is largely due to modern positionless basketball and rule changes.
MJ (6’6” / 215 lbs) was an absolute monster as a shooting guard in his era — his quickness, stickiness, and on-ball tenacity on the perimeter were insane. He also possessed elite steal instincts and shot-blocking for a guard (historically one of the best ever at the position), directly disrupting opponents’ offenses. His size was not far off from players like Kawhi Leonard today.
MJ’s peak defense was classic lockdown style, and the consensus among analysts is that it carried higher individual impact than LeBron’s help-and-switch style. 3. “LeBron guarded the best player while Pippen did it for the Bulls” is a complete myth
Actual film and playoff series analysis shows that, out of 24 playoff series, MJ guarded the better perimeter player 13 times, while Pippen did so 11 times.
Data indicates MJ took on the tougher assignments (elite guards or forwards) more often. Pippen was an incredible help defender and genius in team schemes, but the narrative that “MJ just let Pippen guard everyone” is the typical overreach and exaggeration from Bron-sexuals.

@thxggerr @Joissbert He showed his TS% which is the best metric for efficiency. If you want EFG%, it was 43.1%. He was inefficient as hell, obviously didn’t have a proper 2nd offensive option in the finals so that contributed to it, but 15’ Bron was just inefficient in general. Shooting slump

And lost 8-1 and let KD average 30+ over 2 finals. His strategy was shit and got them smoked. I don't understand why y'all hang onto this quote like we didn't see his strategy FAIL MISERABLY 😂💀

@dgr63w3 @WkndatBurnies Why was KD better in all the non low-leverage series than 17 finals - KD 18 pelicans - KD 18 rockets - KD 18 finals - KD 19 clippers - KD 19 rockets - KD

His on ball ability is slightly above average, off ball is where he thrives. But at the guard position, what player has been top 5 in the world since Kobe/Wade that’s a better defender than him? CP3 in 2013 is the only name I’m listening to.

@JuggernautBron @Richard_H96 Bosh also missed a lot of playoff games. Miamis supporting cast in the 2012 playoffs was vastly underwhelming, especially the spacing

Let’s compare: The 2012 Heat were unfair: “Superteam!” 1996 Bulls: “Bro MJ carried and ya sure Pippen helped.” The MJ cult will tell you that the ocean is orange and that polar bears are friendly.

@bluelemxnade Whos to say these guys aren't both "ceiling" raising, or at least their skillsets? Both operate in high leverage areas, take very little impact from their teammates, and have their own transcendent ceiling raising qualities (Shai - tov suppression, Bird - off ball versatility)

@thxggerr I just don’t respect primarily ceiling raiser guys in these convo’s. Bird’s floor was horrendous compared to every one of his historical peers

@thxggerr·
@bluelemxnade Why did he need it tho? his motion shooting and post counters gave his scoring a very high floor, especially against the best defenses, same with his PM (post connecting, transition, floor spacing) and the adv creation just rose the ceiling

@thxggerr I think bird and his lack of reliable motf creation definitely showed up in the offs and I think his efficiency tended to reflect that. SGA also had efficiency problems in the PS but at least he could empty the clip and generally a playmaking riser (unlike LB)

It’s funny that Joel’s offense dropping in the offs is such a topic of discussion in NBA discourse but his defense rising is nonexistent That 2023 playoff defense was the best I’ve seen in my life bro
Suge@ShotgunnSuge

@Esavage1997156 Considering their defensive peaks are similar and the offense is a hydrogen bomb vs a coughing baby yeah
