Paperback of Kilo: Inside the Cocaine Cartels is out soon from @WmMorrowBooks I’m giving away 5 signed copies. Kilo travels the front lines of the unending war on drugs, meeting the traffickers, hired killers, and police amid record cocaine output. Retweet & I’ll pick five names

I offered to put Paul Schrader in touch with authentic Amazonian shamans who conduct ayahuasca ceremonies in the jungles of Colombia. He seems to have opted for an ayahuasca package tour.
Zach Schonfeld@zzzzaaaacccchhh

Paul Schrader appears to be grieving his wife's death in the most Paul Schrader way possible, by attending a weeklong ayahuasca retreat in Costa Rica and posting Facebook updates like "First aya dosage tonight. Vomitted but no high. No visions. Six hours of boredom."

@NFTC_News This corporate policy is not helping kids who urgently need some correcting - for their sakes and ours. In UK, we just had a case of a man who worked 17 years for a supermarket and lost his job when he tried to stop a shoplifter. Madness.

NEWS FROM THE CONCRETE
Yup CVS policies don't want the staff to intervene. I'd bet any amount of money CVS has occurred more shrink loss in the DMV than any other company.
Walters@waltersbardc

@NFTC_News I walked into the CVS on 12th street yesterday as 30 kids were absolutely looting the candy and drink isle. Staff just watched and said it happens weekly. Won’t be long before they close I’m sure.

I guess I'll have to blog about this tomorrow, but "LOL, Trump TACO'ed out" is decidedly not the right reaction as compared to "that kind of brinkmanship is really fucking dangerous".

One of the great films of cinema. If you've never seen it, catch it quick.
Criterion Collection@Criterion

Evening viewing recommendation? On @criterionchannl, watch OUT OF THE PAST (1947) in our Jacques Tourneur collection! 🖤 bit.ly/4bZw94W Everything you want in a film noir you’ll find here: a tenacious detective (Robert Mitchum) spinning his wheels to make good, a drop-dead beauty (Jane Greer) up to no good, and a moneyed mobster (Kirk Douglas) with a shark’s grin, plus double crosses, fall guys, shadowy rooms, and bleak souls.

Self-appointed representatives of every country we're going to bomb get invited onto every news program because they're fluent in English. Being fluent in English is part of what makes them unrepresentative of their countries.
Aaron Bastani@AaronBastani

Farmers shooting at an American helicopter today. Perhaps the stupidest thing I’ve seen: the media claiming plastic surgeons in LA, and has been comedians in London, are somehow representative of these people. It genuinely feels like we never learn.

@NewPopLit Agreed, the driven genius - the Van Goughs - will do it anyway. But not everything I read or watch is made by geniuses. We had a sustainable cinema industry that produced high-quality films, made by talented people, who could support families.

@tobymuse True, from a certain viewpoint. The question is whether or not the arts are about "making a living," a non-bohemian perspective which IMO has traditionally enforced a mindset of conformity. Arts should be changing, mutating, and that happens outside the acceptable box, IMHO.

Arts history tells us those considered "talented" are those playing by the rules. 19th century French salon painters for instance. Those unable to make a living like Van Gogh were painting anyway, living in poverty, creating the new. Same when, say, rock n roll first broke.
Toby Muse@tobymuse

One reason for our moment of cultural stagnation: if people can't make a living working in culture - music, cinema, journalism, literature, documentaries - the talented have options, they go elsewhere. The only ones making anything will soon be the children/spouses of the rich.

The Baffler@thebafflermag

It’s hard to make a living as a writer: fellowship money dries up, freelance rates keep dropping, and book advances aren’t what they used to be. Our new issue features a forum on the side hustles that journalists, novelists, and poets take on to survive. thebaffler.com/odds-and-ends/…
