The Women’s March on 9 August 1956 was a pivotal event in South African history. Thousands of women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against the pass laws that restricted the movement of black South Africans. Today, on #WomensDay, we thank all those brave women, including Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, Sophia Williams-De Bruyn and Amina Cachalia, to mention a few, on whose shoulders we stand as we celebrate #30YearsOfDemocracy in South Africa this year. #NelsonMandelaFoundation #WomenInHistory

A friend of mine once brought an associate of his to meet Antonio Panico, a legendary bespoke tailor in Naples, Italy. Panico used to be the head cutter at Rubinacci, the most famous tailoring house in the region. In the old Neapolitan way of ordering a suit, you don't just go in, plunk your card down, and order a suit. You sit, have a cup of espresso, and chat for a while. This allows the tailor to get a sense of who you are and what clothes might suit you. Panico is very old school. He's a short Italian man with a voice that sounds like an old truck engine (likely from years of smoking). When you enter his workshop, there's a "greeting room," where you hang out for a bit. You can see it below. I took that photo about 12 years ago when I visited. There's some beautiful art on the walls; in the back, there's a desk with tailor shears. It's a really remarkable place run by one of the most elegant men I've ever met. Anyway, when my friend brought this associate to meet Panico, they went through the ritual. Sat down, had coffee, chatted for a bit. Then the friend was ready to order a suit. When they all stood up, Panico put his hand on this person's back and said "I think you're elegant enough." He wasn't allowed to order. That was a background check.
