Temple architecture in our tradition has, since ancient times, been firmly rooted in scriptural injunctions—particularly the Āgamas and Śilpa Śāstras. The concept of the Aṣṭāṅga Vimana, where three separate garbhagṛhas are arranged vertically one above the other, is well known. Here is additional insight into this unique architectural form, based on the example at Uttiramerur. While the three garbhagṛhas enshrine Viṣṇu in his standing (sthānaka), seated (āsīna), and reclining (śayana) postures, the arrangement goes beyond this. It represents a structured “Nava-mūrti Sthāpana”. In this scheme: Satya, Achyuta, and Aniruddha are installed from south to north, Nara-Nārāyaṇa, Narasimha, and Varāhamūrti are installed from north to south. This layout is not arbitrary—it is prescribed in the Vimānārcana Kalpa of the Marīci Saṁhitā, a Vaikhānasa text. A portion of the passage is given below: “Puruṣa, Satya, Achyuta, Aniruddhānām garbhagṛham daśabhāgam; tat-pramukhe nirgamaṁ yuktyā kṛtvā, tat-sama prācyaṁ mukha-maṇḍapam; Satyādīnām mukha-maṇḍapam tat-garbhagṛha-samam, tripāda-mardhaṁ vā; evaṁ vimānam…” This clearly demonstrates that the vertical and horizontal iconographic arrangements within the vimāna follow a codified theological and architectural framework laid down in the Āgamic tradition. #TempleTales #TempleArchitecture

Today, the Maha Samprokshanam of Thirukoshtiyur Temple is being performed. One of the most remarkable architectural features of the Thirukoshtiyur temple is its gigantic 96-foot-high Ashtanga Vimana, a rarity found only in two early Pandya temples. What makes the Ashtanga Vimana unique? Ordinarily, a temple vimana consists of six angas (parts): Adhisthana, Pada, Prastara, Griva, Shikhara and Stupi. In an Ashtanga Vimana, two additional padas are introduced, taking the total to eight structural components. A striking feature of this architectural form is that each pada houses a separate sanctum. This multi-tiered sanctum arrangement is predominantly associated with Vishnu temples, where Mahavishnu is worshipped in three distinct postures: Kidantha Kolam (reclining), Nindra Kolam (standing), Iruntha Kolam (sitting) Thirukoshtiyur perfectly exemplifies this architecture with; Lower level: Perumal in the reclining posture, accompanied by Sridevi and Bhudevi Middle level: Upendra Narayanan in the standing posture, with Sridevi and Bhudevi Upper level: The shrine of Sri Paravasudevan This vertical ascent through the sanctums is not merely architectural—it is theological, guiding the devotee upward through successive manifestations of Vishnu. Thirukoshtiyur also holds immense Vaishnava significance as one of the 108 Divya Desams, sanctified by the hymns of the Alwars. A temple where Pandya architecture, Vaishnava theology, and sacred geometry come together in one awe-inspiring structure. #TempleTales

Beautiful rendition of the Tamil song “Durga Lakshmi Saraswati” in Ārabhi rāga, aptly presented at the commencement of Chaitra Navaratri. What makes it even more mesmerising are the visuals from the Patteswaram Durga temple. Patteswaram (ancient Pazhayaarai) once served as a capital of the Cholas. Goddess Durga was revered as the guardian deity of the city and worshipped by Chola kings. The Durga shrine here forms part of the Dhenupureeswarar temple complex. Worshipped as Vishnu Durga, the Goddess is depicted with eight hands, holding the śaṅkha (conch), cakra (discus), bow, arrow, sword, shield, and a parrot, standing gracefully in a tribhaṅga posture. The outer maṇḍapas were built by Govinda Dikshitar, the guru of the Thanjavur Nayak king Raghunatha Nayak, which also fittingly aligns with the occasion of Ugadi.

Sanskrit inscription from Padaividu,Tamil Nadu This inscription is engraved on a rock found outside the village Padaividu,Polur taluk, Tiruvannamalai district,T.N. It is written in Sanskrit language and Grantha characters. Seems to records the gift of lands as sarvamaniya by Yedagonam Bhatta Sri for the merit of Nandagōpala Krishna Dēva.

In a significant discovery at Vembakkottai, torpedo jars have been excavated. These jars were widely used in maritime trade from around the 3rd century BCE and served as water-tight containers for transporting liquids such as oil, wine, and other commodities. Sangam literature itself attests to such exchanges. A well-known line refers to wine brought by ships of the Yavanas: “யவனர் நன் கலம் தந்த தண் கமழ் தேறல்” — indicating fragrant wine imported through overseas trade. There is also evidence that products like olive oil were transported in similar containers. What makes this discovery even more significant is the location. Vembakkottai lies along the banks of the Vaippar river, suggesting that these imported goods were not confined to coastal ports but were transported inland through riverine waterways. This points to a well-connected trade network integrating maritime and inland routes.
