City winning forces far less introspection, they have a much smaller media/social media representation and inspire far fewer feelings of jealousy/resentment than those other teams do. Which realistically is what fuels a lot/most of the anti-Arsenal sentiment.

The idea that the pro-City sentiment is something new or comes from a widespread purists' resistance to Arsenal's style of play rather than being driven by not liking a big club which has a big fanbase and media representation feels like a stretch.

Because most feel very little towards City, whereas teams like Arsenal, United, Liverpool, Chelsea + Spurs all inspire strong feelings from neutrals. And City winning can be dismissed as 'well, they're backed by a nation state etc, they should be winning the title every year.'

Let’s talk reality. A Jewish baby born today in a West Bank community will have full rights in Israel, a vote in national elections, and access to civilian courts; a Palestinian baby born in that same community will have no democratic rights, tight restrictions on their movement, frequent harassment from settlers, and no access to justice beyond what Israel’s unaccountable military courts mete out. When I was in my 20s I wished to deepen my understanding of the Israel-Palestine situation. So I purchased at least a dozen books - mostly semi-obscure, academic, many by dissenting Israeli historians. A day came when I closed a book halfway through, resolved to read no further, even to try to forget all I had learned, and then I donated all the books. This seemed to wind a lot of people up last week. I stand by it. There was a banner in the Matthew Harding stand displayed before kick-off last night that displayed all of Chelsea’s trophies. And slap bang in the middle of it - much bigger than all the others - was the Club World Cup. It was good at the time but nobody outside Chelsea rates it. Forget about it, move on and concentrate on winning a trophy that will really send a statement.
