Growing up in the 80+90s, the ten poorest places in the UK were in Scotland. Devolving power has directly caused that to change. They’re largely all in northern England now. Reform are terrified of the Scottish Parliament’s success story; they fear we’ll leave (them behind).
The National@ScotNational

BREAKING: Reform UK have pledged to cut the size of the Scottish Parliament and regularly review its devolved powers if they win the Holyrood election The party's Scottish manifesto also says they would would 'repeal SNP bad laws' and introduce sweeping changes to the tax system

@themikedoug @paradiseonhulu Wow interesting! I broke my cardinal rule by only watching episode 1 and I didn’t think it was for me but I have been reading enough to realise I might well have been wrong 😅

Took me long enough but finally just about fully up to date with @paradiseonhulu and it is pretty damn exceptional TV. Got a little bit of everything from many great shows down the years (Lost, Walking Dead, West Wing to name but a few)

@theiaincameron I’ve visited a few times (its incredible), but on the first occasion I caught a tour guide and asked if he thought there were more still buried nearby… and he casually pointed over the fence to loads more they were intentionally not opening - blew my mind!

Skara Brae is northern Europe’s best-preserved Neolithic village. Situated on the Orkney Islands in northern Scotland, this remarkable set of dwellings was first occupied over 5,000 years ago and used for about 600 years thereafter. 1. 📷 Jim Richardson: nessofbrodgar.co.uk/skarabrae/

This has always, and will always, make me feel like crazy. Sport has such sb incredible capacity to change lives, spark truly unbelievable moments and create bonds that last a lifetime.

19 years ago, a high school basketball coach put his team manager into a game for the final four minutes. The kid had never played a single minute of competitive basketball in his life. He scored 20 points. Jason McElwain was diagnosed with severe autism at age two. He didn’t speak until he was five. He couldn’t chew solid food until he was six. He wore a nappy for most of his early childhood. As a baby, he was rigid, wouldn’t make eye contact, and hid in corners away from other children. He tried out for his school basketball team every year and got cut every time. Too small. Too slight. Barely 5’6 and about 54 kilograms. But he loved the game so much that his mum called the school and asked if there was any way he could be involved. The coach created a team manager role for him. For three years, McElwain showed up to every practice and every game. He wore a shirt and tie on match days. He ran drills, handed out water, kept stats, and cheered every basket like he’d scored it himself. On 15 February 2006, the last home game of his final school year, the coach let him suit up in a proper jersey and sit on the bench. With four minutes left and a comfortable lead, the coach sent him in. His first shot missed. His second missed. Then something shifted. He hit a three-pointer. Then another. Then another. His teammates stopped shooting entirely and just kept passing him the ball. He hit six three-pointers and a two-pointer. 20 points in four minutes. The highest scorer in the game. When the final buzzer went, the entire crowd rushed the court and lifted him onto their shoulders. His mum tapped the coach on the shoulder, in tears. “This is the nicest gift you could have ever given my son.” McElwain won the ESPY Award for Best Moment in Sports that year, beating out some of the biggest names in professional sport. He’s 36 now. He works at a local supermarket, coaches basketball, has run 17 marathons including five Boston Marathons, and travels the country speaking about never giving up. When asked about that night, his coach still gets emotional. “For him to come in and seize the moment like he did was certainly more than I ever expected. I was an emotional wreck.”

@jonlis1 Yep. There’s nationalist factors, but Scotland has been demonstrating this over decades. Labour has been entirely replaced as the progressive party, where social issues were central to the SNP winning every local & national election from 2010 until 2024, & will be again in 2026.

The by-election result starkly demonstrates just how foolish and complacent Labour was to ditch its left and centre-left base to stake the house on Reform voters. Millions of progressives in this country do now have somewhere to go if Labour doesn’t want them. Does it?

Scott McTominay’s bicycle kick goal in Scotland’s victory over Denmark — a win that saw the nation qualify for their first World Cup in 28 years — has been commemorated with a mural outside Hampden Park. The 29-year-old scored the first goal of the 4-2 win on November 18, a brilliant overhead effort following a Ben Doak cross after just three minutes. @HMFC_Ollie @Day_Night_Dan @FP_Scotland Aye, for international sport, eligibility rules are necessary. I’m being ideological. Where I’m from we have the Highland Welcome; those who come, work & contribute benefit us. All we really are is atoms, and the sum of our experiences (rather than where we’re from), brother.

Reportedly a new mural of Scott McTominay’s overhead kick against Denmark is being put up nearby Hampden Park. What do you think? 😍 📸 David Burt via Robbie Boyd

@HMFC_Ollie @Day_Night_Dan @FP_Scotland Naa. Gatekeeping nationality based purely on ethnicity is naïve at best. Nationality, belonging, home, they’re much more than that - they’re about *identity*. History/genealogy show we’re all a mix of migrations e.g. pre-Scot Celts were a tapestry of migrations from Europe+Asia.

@Day_Night_Dan @FP_Scotland Being Scottish is a state of mind, and if you want to be Scottish you are Scottish. There’s no other qualification, nor should there be. The lad pulls on a Scotland shirt and makes us all proud of our nation - he’s Scottish. Wind yer neck in.
