…@lyft @davidrisher
I'm honestly really frustrated and upset right now, and I feel like this is something that needs to be shared.
This morning, my boyfriend Mario and I had an appointment at 11:00 . It's only about 10-15 minutes away from where we are, so we figured getting there would be simple. Mario requested a ride through Lyft and included a note letting the driver know he has a service animal with him, along with his partner. That information was there ahead of time so there wouldn't be any confusion, at least in theory.
The first driver had an ETA of about 5 minutes. Since we are both blind, we have no way of knowing exactly where the driver is or what's happening beyond what the app tells us. We don't know if they arrived and left or just chose not to pick us up. Suddenly, the ride switched to another driver.
The second driver started about 4 minutes away. Mario even got a notification saying the driver had read his note, which we had never seen before. For a moment, that actually gave us hope. But then the time kept increasing, and it looked like they were going in the complete opposite direction. After about 10 minutes of waiting, the ETA updated to 15 minutes. Mario messaged them to check if everything was okay... and moments later, we were switched to yet another driver.
Now we were on driver number 3.
This third driver actually made it to us. Mario recognized the vehicle based on the sound and the type of car listed on the Lyft app, and we started heading toward it. As Mario reached out and put his hand on the door handle to get in, the driver suddenly put the car in gear and started to pull away. At the same time, they shouted, "No dog! No dog!" and drove off.
I can't even fully describe how upsetting that moment was.
Not only was this the third driver, but we were refused a ride because of a service animal. A service animal, not a pet, but a working animal that guides a blind person.
And the sad reality is... this isn't rare. This happens far more often than it should. Not every single time, but honestly, most of the time, there's some kind of issue.
In the end of it all, we weren't able to get to where we needed to be in time. The place we had an appointment with was going on lunch break at noon , and by the time we could have gotten another ride, it would have already been too late.
We reported everything through the app, and like always, the response was the same, which is a $10 credit. That doesn't fix the situation. It doesn't even fully cover a ride. Mario has even tried escalating things to higher levels within the company before, and every single time, it leads back to the same response.
At what point does this actually get taken seriously?
I remember one time, a driver asked Mario why he doesn't just select the pet option when requesting a ride. That question alone shows the misunderstanding. A service animal is NOT a pet. It is a working dog that guides a blind person. Being expected to select a pet option, and potentially pay extra, just to avoid discrimination is completely wrong.
This is discrimination. Plain and simple.
Yes, things may be better than they were decades ago, but situations like this show that we still have a long way to go. Everyday tasks, like getting to an appointment 10 minutes away, become unnecessarily stressful and complicated.
I'm sharing this not just to vent, but to bring awareness to what people with disabilities, especially those with service animals, deal with on a daily basis. This isn't just an inconvenience. It directly impacts independence, safety, and quality of life.
If you're reading this, please take a moment to understand and share this with others. Maybe more awareness can lead to better education, and eventually, real change.
Anyway, thanks for reading.

@SenSanders Those don’t come free. Their extremely high tax rate is what funds this. Stop using the free word. Biggest lie.
