Even though it has been 30 years since I wrote any assembler, I'm fairly sure that although I write in C, it's clear that I'm thinking in assembler. All the linked lists, bit settings, and offset from pointers live on. The 68000 was a BIG influence on my programming.

Starting work on turn-taking. Now when you end a go, the CPU automatically centres each of its units before handing back control for the next round. Enemy units don't do anything yet, but it's a good 1st step. #ZXSpectrum #8bit #indiedev #retrogaming

@UridiumAuthor Sounds like me just using C to organize my asm thoughts for the PCE games I write lol.

There will be no explosion. No one wants to go back to a small CRT screen with wired controllers and limited hardware to play games. Regardless of how strong the nostalgia is. The resident evil remakes are a good example of my point. Old hardware does not = good games.

Underrated side-effect of AI: we are about to get a cambrian explosion of new games for retro consoles Took me 5-6 prompts to make a working game with music in assembly on SNES We’ll see “Steam for Super Nintendo” before the decade is out.

@Stretchedwiener No, I dont think talking about 30 year old games wouldve resonated with 13 year olds in 2021 lol Getting people to want to program now is a weird hurdle.

@Aetherbyte Sorry. Did you talk about making PC engine games? I'm a toy designer/sculptor and the hurdle for getting started is much much lower. Kids can get going, if inspired, with nothing beyond what they already have in their homes.

Programming simple retro games is how we get new game developers, kids exploring tech, fun hobbies, communities of creatives supporting each other. Having software output a little retro game bypasses ALL of that and more. I get this is "for fun". And it took "5 minutes". And I get that I'm "old manning" it here with my memories of hand typing a game from a magazine and modifying it to learn how to do it when I was a lad. But we're losing something.

@Aetherbyte I did the same, repeatedly. Many kids sent me their own toy designs, asked for craft store shopping lists, asked for 3d modeling recommendations etc. You're not wrong - what you're describing IS happening, but it's not all of them.

@Stretchedwiener I went and did career talks at middle schools a few years ago. That was a disheartening disaster. Nobody had interest in programming lol. Just going viral and playing on tablets. Its going to be rough.

@Aetherbyte The guy promoting this nonsense isn't "current gen". He's some weird adult. The kids that I know want to do things themselves. AI is a joke to them.

@korkmazelm @Rahll Yes. But painstaking is hyperbolic. One sprite load isnt hundreds of lines of asm code, either. Wait til you find out how apple ][/c64 devs started out lol.

@Rahll So you mean kids in mid 2000s were into early 90s tech and creating painstakingly hard assembly demos, which even loading one sprite is hundreds lines of code?

Seeing all these people excited about using AI to shit out games (to sell) have very seriously lost the plot. Were about to get professional grade 250 in 1 shovelware releases for full price. Big meteor when?
