Much of the debate is focused on whether the Islamic Republic endures this war. But in my latest for @RUSI_org I argue that the real test lies in what comes after. Right now, the focus is on short-term timelines: strikes, retaliation, escalation control.
But Iran’s future stability will be shaped over a much longer horizon—years, not weeks.
The scale of economic damage, the burden of recovery (including vital food and water security) and whether Iran can still access the regional financial ecosystem that has helped it absorb sanctions pressure.
The IRGC sits at the centre of this. The IRGC isn’t just a military actor—it’s an economic system.
Regime survival is tied not just to ideology, but to entrenched economic interests—networks spanning energy, logistics, and sanctions-era commerce.
That can hold things together. It can also fracture under strain.
If the UAE and others become less permissive—tightening oversight, closing grey-zone channels—Iran’s room to manoeuvre narrows, and any Iran-GCC reset will come with conditions.

ZELENSKYY to BBC: We went through difficult relations with Iran. We did nothing to them. They shot down our plane, killed our passengers and crew, didn’t admit it, and didn’t let experts in.
Then the full-scale war started. They handed Shahed drones to Russians to kill our civilians. I asked them to stop. They promised there would be only one batch. They lied and kept supplying weapons.
That’s why I consider them accomplices of Russia.

London Green Party candidate Tope Olawoyin has quit in disgrace after claiming the arson attack that torched four Jewish Hatzola ambulances in Golders Green was an "inside job" by Jews themselves.
She posted on X: “I can say with almost absolute certainty the men arrested are white… probably even Jewish.”
This came after police arrested five suspects, including a 17-year-old British-Pakistani, and treated the blaze as an antisemitic hate crime.
Olawoyin had introduced Green leader Zack Polanski on stage and was running in Havering on May 7.
Green Party forced to accept her resignation and issue damage-control statements.

It's important that people like Rory say this, the reality is unless more white politicians speak up the conversation is very easy to ignore, they can't leave it to just black and brown people or to Muslims to fight.
The AFD in Germany, Reform in the UK, the Front National in France, they're all part of the same rise of the far right across Europe.
We all need to stand united!
