@Numbername88 Maybe. It depends.
An easy example I can think of, is MLP. That was made to cater specifically to a young female audience. But as we saw, it attracted an entirely different audience. You also got games that were male focused, but had dedicated female bases.

@BCGuild96 While I do agree that regardless of the main content, a series will attract certain people feel when the series doesn't fully pander to those people, they will fall off it over time.

I have a theory. What separates Touhou 80% of of Otaku media is it doesn't pander to Otaku. Touhou isn't a waifu series, it has no lewd characters to pander to lonely men. Series like Blue Archive do pander to that crowd, so it attracts them.

@Numbername88 “Otaku” are a but more complicated compared to their forebears. Some things remain consistent. But due to changes in society and culture, there is a lot more variation nowadays.

@Numbername88 whatsoever. (Hard to believe I know) but they have played the Touhou games, like the older women archetypes, and despise other otaku who like the younger characters in that way.

@Numbername88 So to end this overly long thread. I can see where the theory is coming from. But upon doing a dive with the various communities, it starts to fall apart. Humans, are a difficult beast to box in, as we are walking contradictions.

@Numbername88 There’s also the fact that you have different subsets of Otaku that don’t get along with each other. Yuri vs heteros. Wholesome vs fetish. Preference for older women vs younger women characters etc. You need only look at social media to see that in action.-
