Teacher Found Guilty of Murdering and Raping Adopted Baby Boy. Jamie Varley, 37, from England, was found guilty of murder and a string of other serious crimes involving Preston Davey. His partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, was convicted of causing or allowing the child’s death, child cruelty, and sexually assaulting the boy. Preston was born in June 2022 and taken into emergency foster care by Oldham Council just days later because of his biological mother’s history. He spent his first nine months in foster care and was described as happy and healthy during that time. The couple was approved to adopt him. Preston moved in with Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley around late March or early April 2023 when he was about nine months old. Over the next four months, Preston suffered repeated physical and sexual abuse. A post-mortem examination found he had 40 traumatic injuries, including dozens of bruises, internal injuries, and a non-accidental fracture to his arm. He died on July 27, 2023, from suffocation. Varley initially told police and hospital staff that Preston had accidentally drowned in the bath. That account did not match the medical evidence.
