@KatzFilms Good advice, however the problem is deeper. So many new screenwriters dont even know what a set up/pay off is, they scoff at structure, etc. i sold my first script in 1991 and those things are my bible thanks to Syd Field

I see a lot of bad screenwriting advice on here, often from people who aren't working industry professionals. Here is some basic advice: within three act structure, focus on set-ups and payoffs across story, action and character. Outline fully. Write it out from there. Then edit.

This article has a lot of good points but I would like to make one of my own. BAYWATCH, I get it – but THE ROCKFORD FILES, LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, SCRUBS? Nobody gives a fuck about these shows anymore. THE SOCIAL NETWORK does not need a sequel. Nor does BEETLEJUICE or SPACEBALLS. You know what's gonna kill Hollywood a heck of a lot faster than the lack of tax breaks? Making more crappy sequels and reboots that nobody wants to see based on dusty old IP that isn't worth shit. variety.com/2026/tv/featur…

Big Hollywood wont die but there are massive changes coming. AI is going to lower budgets and make studios more profitable but there will be w lot of crew needing to find new careers. AI will also create a new segment filled with indie filmmakers similar to how the 80s direct to video market did (i made my first movie in 1985).

With all the doomsayer talk of the death of Hollywood, let’s put things into perspective. This has been a great year. My friends in the exhibition business are downright upbeat, something they haven’t been for years. Audiences are going to the movies. They say 2027 and 2028 will be even better. We’ve just seen two indie films from new directors do huge business, thanks to skillful & deft Hollywood distribution. Disclosure Day has done respectable business and like the film or not, it had people talking. And even if you didn’t care for it’s boomer perspective, it’s coming on the heels of Project Hail Mary, which was Hollywood doing what Hollywood does best, with traditional positive storytelling, also with aliens, and a pro humanity, pro morality, visually fantastic character study which explores our relationship with God. We have a new Paramount rising from the brink with the promise of 30 new films a year. There’s new and exciting storytelling tools available to all, heretofore unseen in history, which will certainly advance the medium. The year 2026 has been awesome so far. I can’t wait to see what’s next to come. Hollywood’s absolutely not dead.

@Jamie_Nash The real problem w screenplays today is that the writers, along w much of society, have never reached full maturity/adulthood. They literally are writing at a high school level as thats where their maturity is stuck

Feature screenwriters: go to the movies. Not for research. Not to analyze structure. Just sit in a theater. Look at the posters in the lobby. Watch the trailers. Eat the popcorn. It’ll help your writing somehow. I promise.

Foster Mom Exposes the Demonic Fraud Inside Foster Care “She goes, ‘Oh honey, I make $28,000 a month on foster care.’ I was like, ‘What?’ And she was like, ‘Yeah, because I have this many kids.’ She goes, ‘Here’s the thing. You want to make sure they fail in school. If they fail in school and you can get them on medication, your rate goes up. Every time they don’t pass a grade, your rate goes up because they’re a more difficult kid. Every time they need medication, your rate goes up.’” @jen_lilley

Just watched #Obsession! Hot take: Sandy’s death opening the movie is more than just a tragedy. It shows how Bear would be treating Nikki down the line. He lost his pet due to not caring for it (he knew the shelves with the pills were flimsy but did nothing to fix that, the food is just lying around). And I feel like that’s exactly what he does to Nikki, he gets a pet. The one that “loves him more than anyone”, and doesn’t care for her. If Bear really loved Nikki, then Nikki’s wish shouldn’t have worked. But because his entire demeanor changed like hers, it proves one last time that he never truly loved Nikki. The only person Bear actually loves is himself.

One big problem i find with AI is that as the owner of a large publicly visible company I cannot use it for creative works GPT for instance sometimes refuses to create content for my company saying it violates Timcast's copyright and trademark despite the fact the graphics are for the company Similarly Suno will not allow me to edit or remix my own songs because they are protected and publicly visible To put it simply these AIs are trying to protect IP and thus blocking me from using my own IP Yet a smaller company which is less visible has no issue creating images, graphics, videos, or music for their companies

The predictable essence is what Hollywood always sells. And when you start looking at careers that way, the pattern becomes obvious. Jim Carrey isn’t really selling Ace Ventura, The Mask, or Bruce Almighty individually. The audience is buying elastic-faced Jim Carrey chaos. The particulars change. The core experience stays recognizable. Ben Stiller isn’t selling Zoolander, Dodgeball, or Tropic Thunder as completely unrelated products. The audience is buying a particular flavor of awkward absurdity, social discomfort, and comic escalation. M. Night Shyamalan isn’t selling individual premises. For years he was selling the feeling that reality is hiding something from you. The Duffer Brothers weren’t merely selling Stranger Things or The Boroughs. They were selling a specific experience: “Normal reality contains a hidden adjacent reality.” That’s the product. The monsters, children, laboratories, retirement communities, portals, towns, and settings are interchangeable pieces around the central experience. Hollywood is a reduction machine. A creator makes something complex. The audience loves it. Hollywood then asks: “What single thing did people actually buy?” Then it reduces the work down to that answer. Jim Carrey becomes “funny faces.” M. Night becomes “twists.” The Duffer Brothers become “secret worlds.” Then future projects are built around preserving that recognizable element. From a business perspective this makes perfect sense. Investors want familiarity. From an artistic perspective it can become a trap. A studio succeeds by making surprises predictable. Those goals coexist for a while. Then eventually they collide and a career comes to a screeching halt and power remains in the hands of bureaucrats with no imagination who forced this situation and guaranteed their own survival.

Adam Schiff released a video fantasizing about what “we” could pay for “by the wealth of our first trillionaire." "$1 trillion, if we decided to distribute that equally among American households, your household would get $7,500..." Sounds downright utopian, Adam.

Why someone would want to AI a screenplay is beyond me. I swear screen screenwriter is the best part of filmmaking at least for me.... the only hard part is narrowing your focus instead of spreading it out, it'll take you forever to do things lol which is not always a bad thing
