There is an old European tale called the Merchant of Venice about a Jew who demands a lump of human flesh as security for a loan. At the end of the tale, his daughter falls in love with a Christian, his wealth is expropriated, and he forced to convert to Christianity.

There is an old Jewish tale told in the Talmud about a master who sent his servant to buy for him fish in the market. The servant came back with a fish that was utterly rotten and smelled bad for his master. His master gave the servant three options: Eat the rotten fish, pay a fine, or be expelled from the city. The servant chose the first and began eating the rotten fish. Halfway through eating the rotten fish he just couldn't stomach it anymore so he asked to pay the fine. After he paid half the fine he realized he cannot afford it anymore and was therefore expelled from the city, thereby taking on all three punishments. That is what JD Vance did to himself by turning on Israel and his horrifying performance today in Switzerland.

The people decide the particulars to what is fair as a group and take into account each perspective. I don’t believe in a ‘leader’ per se, I believe that working people as a unit deserve a fairer, more enjoyable and fulfilling life that profit incentives and so called ‘free markets’ don’t allow for, and since the workers are the backbone of society they should be able to make these decisions, not those who have more capital that extract the wealth from their labour.

@ThinkFinance999 Blaming EU complaints ignores how China enforces those blocks. Beijing strictly bottlenecks Ukrainian purchases while allowing massive Russian state-backed smuggling networks to operate freely. Selective enforcement of export laws is not neutrality.

Also, some of the direct export blocks were prompted by stupid EU politicians complaining about Chinese supplies to Russia, apparently oblivious to the fact China also supplied the other side. Said another way, you asked for that particular outcome. But the parts continued flowing.

Cutting to 38% in a much larger number of drones doesn't even mean fewer parts, and then there's the need to understand how it's all accounted for as lots of (nearly all) imports will be mislabeled, indirect. Nearly all optical fiber being used by both sides is Chinese, for instance. Notice that there's a lot of incentive to present you with a lower number in this case, so all possible machinations to show you a lower number will be used. In general skepticism is highly warranted for a lot of stuff in the current world. The only certainty in this case is that China is a huge supplier to both sides.

@CatchToonda I'm real, China is treating the two sides neutrally. The dual use stuff isn't (in practice) restricted to any of the two sides. The military stuff is restricted to both sides. Dig into it further and you'll see this is reality.

As I said, indirectly that stuff reaches both sides. Nobody is saying Russia doesn't get it. I'm saying both sides get it, which means China acts as a neutral party. You're just equating it supplying Russia indirectly as not being neutral, forgetting that it equally supplies the other side, which is within the meaning of "neutral".

If you think those massive numbers of drones the other side uses aren't running on Chinese componentry you're very wrong... As I said, in practice China is neutral, though neutral does mean ignoring western sanctions and keeping the economic routes open, which is very useful for Russia, and it also includes lots of dual use stuff which, again, reaches both sides (mostly indirectly).

@ThinkFinance999 Labor migration explains textile factories in Vietnam, not the 3x post-2022 spike in dual-use tech exports to Central Asia. Corporate filings won't report sanctions evasion. Surging machine shipments to Russian neighbors aren't about cheap labor; they are smuggling pipelines.

The regional investments started a long time ago. Some are as you say, many are not. The main driving force has been that labor costs increased a lot in China, so many lower value added activities migrated regionally. I have read many hundreds of filings from HK-listed companies with business in mainland China, the above is the reality.

@CatchToonda It has turned out reasonably ok - Chinese firms have been investing heavily into neighboring countries... China's contribution to Russia has been mostly in keeping markets between China and Russia reasonably open.

@ThinkFinance999 Or, you can look at it as someone with agency, which Europe has, and can make a choice between the two spheres. But we all know what will happen if you choose to switch sides. Maybe you could partner with Russia too, it would make your energy cheaper

@CatchToonda Notice what that implies - that Europe cannot decide in its own interests as it will be subjected to US sanctions if it does. Who would want to partner with the US under such obvious coercion? That's a powerful reason to NOT partner with them.

I think Europe should decide in its own interests. Such interests, right now, would involve having the Chinese establish production, advanced suppliers in Europe, enabling Europeans to also be competitive elsewhere. Also, by breaking the US blockade on advanced semiconductors, Europe could create an entire semiconductor industry in Europe, using Chinese investment.

It doesn't matter what motivated it - it just showed the US hand that you're in the same boat as China, when it comes to the highest tech, if the US wants. China hasn't done the same (except in retaliation for Europe joining other US bans). So now, ira quite obvious that it's better for Europe to align with China than with the US. Which, of course, is a tremendous change from the past, so in spite of it being obvious, most won't accept it for a long time, further delaying Europe's own development.
