WHAT IFS, WORLD CUP EDITION: What if Baggio scored? What if Robben beat Casillas? What if Gyan’s penalty went in? What if Kolo Muani found the corner? What if Nigeria survived those final minutes against Italy? What if Maradona’s hand was spotted? What if Escobar never turned it in? Football is haunted by moments decided in inches. A shot. A save. A whistle. A decision. Entire legacies balanced on seconds. Every fan has one moment they still replay in their head. Not because they forgot, but because part of them still can’t accept it did.

@AARONATION_M This is just a friendly. You can't judge a club by the preseason; if so, Chelsea would win every trophy every season.

Funny English how fans will watch the kind of football England plays under Thomas Tuchel and then open their mouths that "It's coming home". Nothing for England under Tuchel

@JacentaArs I can understand Saliba. I can also forgive Van Dijk. Number 1 and 2 have similar profile. But that Curbasi! How?

Can someone explain to me like I’m 6 years old why Saliba has a higher market value than Gabriel?

My favorite World Cup still remains the 2002 Korea/Japan tournament because I watched almost all the matches and there were so many crazy moments. However, my most memorable World Cup moment to date came in the following edition: Germany 2006. The Netherlands vs Portugal round-of-16 match will be remembered for years because of the chaos and drama it produced. If there is a football match that could have caused a full-blown war, it was that one. It was so intense that it produced a record 16 yellow cards and 4 red cards. It was later termed the "Battle of Nuremberg." With a place in the quarter-finals at stake and little to nothing between the two nations in terms of quality and talent, both teams believed they could reach the quarter-finals at the expense of the other. Although there was a yellow card shown to a Dutch player in the early minutes, the tackle that sent Cristiano Ronaldo off the pitch in tears was probably what sparked the real tension. The rest of the game saw tackles flying left, right, and center, with the referee separating the opposing players issuing yellow cards at every opportunity. As ugly as the game was, it had a beautiful moment at the end: Deco and Giovanni van Bronckhorst, both sent off during the match, were seen chatting near the tunnel. Although their facial expressions showed they hadn’t enjoyed every incident that led to the red cards, one wonders — could they have been chatting about what they could do to prevent further escalation after the final whistle? World Cup moments are always memorable, and all football fans are eagerly anticipating what 2026 has in store for us, with the tournament just days away.

We can now agree that Messi didn’t win the World Cup because he deserved it; he won because someone else failed to do their job. Gyan didn’t hit the bar because the keeper did his job. Sometimes, the villain like Suarez also wins.

Agreed, he wasn’t carried. However, tell me what Messi did better to deserve the trophy more than Mbappé. For instance, the final was the biggest game of his life, but Mbappé (who has already won the World Cup) showed more hunger. No player would dominate the “GOAT” in a career-defining game, but he was second in everything. Even in that last minute of Kolo madness, Mbappé was there and ready. De Maria was the unsung hero in the Olympics. I’m not saying he didn’t play. I’m saying someone else deserved to win the World Cup 2022 more than him. We all saw how every 50/50 call went Argentina’s way. The fine margins that determine the final outcome in football. He was gifted.
BEN@afc_ben10

Messi’s World Cup was not “gifted” or carried. He was the main force from start to finish, goals, assists, chance creation, leadership, and consistency in every round. Argentina did well as a team, but Messi was clearly the driving influence in almost every key moment

This prediction stems from a place of hate. Ronaldo won the Euros with less effort. Sometimes you work hard and don’t get the result you deserve. Mbappé worked smart and hard four years ago, but Messi, who was gifted the World Cup with a beautiful assist from Kolo Muani, gets the praise. Messi rode on the backs of Martinez and Kolo to be regarded as the best. Maradona and Pelé earned their place. I am not backing Portugal this year, not because of Ronaldo but because of their FA, who made a terrible decision by appointing Martinez, a serial team killer. He relegated Wigan and wasted Belgium's golden generation. He hasn’t won anything big in his entire coaching career.
