The discourse about Ayaan Hirsi Ali and civilisational Christianity made me think back to that devastatingly unwelcome moment when I realised not only that I believed in God, but I was even going to have to seek baptism, for @TheCriticMag. thecritic.co.uk/against-christ…

@john_ritzema If ever Vatican communiques start seeming similar to the tone on here then we've definitely reached the end times.

It's really okay to marry someone, stick with them, and raise kids together. No journalist will write an edgy magazine piece about your lifestyle, but you'll have a great shot at a fulfilling and meaningful life.

Imagine not instinctively, unreflectively, and unreservedly understanding and defending the fact that a Passion Play being performed in Trafalgar Square is qualitatively different in almost all imaginable respects from the gathering of any other religion in the same space.

@heofonbeorht Lol, fair. But read in conjunction with the whole of DH it's clear the Catholic Church bears uniquely the fullness of truth, so the proper choice for special civil privileges remains Catholicism, and this needn't entail not granting religious liberty.

@Counteredlogos yup that’s something but can’t be enthusiastic about historical christendom being indirectly described as “peculiar circumstances”

@heofonbeorht I think religious liberty and the right to hold large events in flagship civic spaces are different (albeit admittedly closely related). One can tightly control civic spaces while allowing full religious liberty. On DH, I'm making much of the "special civic recognition" clause:

@Counteredlogos I agree with you but I’m not clear that DH (and therefore the Catholic Church as consitituted) does

@LedgerLomasM Yes, but intra-Christian relations are different insofar as London was a Catholic city for centuries prior. I also think religious liberty and large scale events in flagship civic spaces are not the same.

@Counteredlogos But (as you know) as late as 1908 a Catholic Eucharistic procession couldn't happen in London as it would offend Prod sensibilities. So saying that England has a Xian past doesn't alter the need now that there should be religious liberty for everyone.

Trafalgar Square is a place. Trafalgar Square has a history. Trafalgar Square was built by people with a shared culture. At the heart of every culture is religion.

Today I dug a new flowerbed and planted roses and spring bulbs. Probably my most middle-aged opinion is that gardening is genuinely enjoyable.

My lastest for @Prosperity_Inst, in which I discuss: 🇵🇰how we've been swayed by migrant sectarianism for a long time 🇬🇧how it's different to historic British sectarianism (e.g. Northern Ireland) 🪙how this is a golden opportunity for the British Right Read it now 👇

➗A new British sectarianism was revealed in the Gorton and Denton by-election, argues @RDLaverty in his latest Substack. The Greens' recent victory presents a fresh opportunity for the British Right to show what mass immigration really means. Read now👉prosperitypapers.substack.com/publish/post/1…
