Imagine not instinctively, unreflectively, and unreservedly understanding and defending the fact that a Passion Play being performed in Trafalgar Square is qualitatively different in almost all imaginable respects from the gathering of any other religion in the same space.

@heofonbeorht Lol, fair. But read in conjunction with the whole of DH it's clear the Catholic Church bears uniquely the fullness of truth, so the proper choice for special civil privileges remains Catholicism, and this needn't entail not granting religious liberty.

@heofonbeorht I think religious liberty and the right to hold large events in flagship civic spaces are different (albeit admittedly closely related). One can tightly control civic spaces while allowing full religious liberty. On DH, I'm making much of the "special civic recognition" clause:

@LedgerLomasM Yes, but intra-Christian relations are different insofar as London was a Catholic city for centuries prior. I also think religious liberty and large scale events in flagship civic spaces are not the same.

@Counteredlogos But (as you know) as late as 1908 a Catholic Eucharistic procession couldn't happen in London as it would offend Prod sensibilities. So saying that England has a Xian past doesn't alter the need now that there should be religious liberty for everyone.

Trafalgar Square is a place. Trafalgar Square has a history. Trafalgar Square was built by people with a shared culture. At the heart of every culture is religion.

Converting to Catholicism or Eastern Orthodox is the new going to India to find yourself.

@Counteredlogos Habermas suffered from the same type of congenital idiocy as the most naive libertarian economic theorists.

Re-read it recently. One of Habermas' insights struck me - that people without belief need to look to Christianity to understand the possibilities and processes of moral rehabilitation. A secular society is one in which almost everything is permitted, but nothing is forgiven.
