A lot of chatter about Sarah Mullally, with little appreciation for the wider context of what Newman called the "specious" theory of Anglicanism. I tried to explain this, especially to fellow Catholics, in a 2022 review essay in @thelampmagazine. thelampmagazine.com/issues/issue-1…

Good illustration of a big problem with the Tories: you have Nick Timothy being brave and straightforward about demographic change, & other MPs enthusiastically joining in with attempts to cancel Falklands War heroes like it's still 2020.

@Mr_Andrew_Fox @DrChrisParry He’s an arrogant man, out of his depth, who was always going to pile-in in the political arena because he’s a liability. Having had multiple run-ins with him this is the least surprising outcome. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

The Times reports the Royal Navy will take the lead in a “Hormuz Coalition” to reopen the strait, with Britain deploying mine-clearing units alongside the U.S. and France. Interesting.

“Lord, holy Father, almighty, eternal God. You placed the salvation of the human race upon the wood of the cross,
so that where death arose, there life might rise again;
and the one who conquered on a tree, might also be conquered on a tree:
through Christ our Lord” a translation of the Preface of the Holy Cross in the old rite … to me this seems to be the same message as the new missal but the new missal loses the typological comparison with the tree of Eden

@BigBlobApe Oh yes I know! That picture is from the Missal in my office. I meant the source as in where it came from, who wrote it, what they are based upon etc.

Our priests have been praying this Eucharistic Prayer “for Reconciliation” during Lent and I have no idea what the source of these prayers is, but this is absolutely beautiful and I keep thinking about it. I love the mention of “the wood of the cross” during Lent.

Just saw this from @wattsandco on Facebook - how does one go about petitioning Rome to permit Lenten array?

@heofonbeorht @LMSChairman Probably not. What I hope for is at least an increasingly peaceful coexistence. That will require not only a return to wisdom in the hierarchy, but also for the attendees of both liturgies to stop contemning the faith of the other group.

@EggrollShogun It was @Laocailarry who said that feminism, uniquely of all ideologies, makes no universalist claims to the Good. Christians, Muslims, socialists, traditionalists, liberals, capitalists all think their way is best for everyone. But feminism is pure “heads I win tails you lose”.

@CatholicPods @LMSChairman we need to be realistic that this will not happen in any sort of acceptable way in our lifetime

@LMSChairman I would like to see a unified calendar, but not just by putting everything on the new calendar (which, to be fair, he didn't say was the idea)

@Emma506131772 @LMSChairman @enternoon Genuine question: why do we need this? The Latin Church has many different usages. I recognise that is not the case with the Roman rite but who knows how things could evolve over time? We can just live and let live. Unity doesn't mean uniformity, as Pope Francis said.

Why? Just why? You realise that all sorts of variations on the Universal Calendar exist? Why does this one bother you? Why can’t you just leave us in peace?

@cath_menarion the reforms of the calendar starting in 1950s under Pius XII were extremely bad, so even 1960 calendar rubrics are far from where things should be

@heofonbeorht Lol, fair. But read in conjunction with the whole of DH it's clear the Catholic Church bears uniquely the fullness of truth, so the proper choice for special civil privileges remains Catholicism, and this needn't entail not granting religious liberty.

Imagine not instinctively, unreflectively, and unreservedly understanding and defending the fact that a Passion Play being performed in Trafalgar Square is qualitatively different in almost all imaginable respects from the gathering of any other religion in the same space.

@Counteredlogos yup that’s something but can’t be enthusiastic about historical christendom being indirectly described as “peculiar circumstances”

@heofonbeorht I think religious liberty and the right to hold large events in flagship civic spaces are different (albeit admittedly closely related). One can tightly control civic spaces while allowing full religious liberty. On DH, I'm making much of the "special civic recognition" clause:

It always takes going to Central Europe to realise, with some degree of regret, that neither Britain nor Ireland are really European countries, but their own Atlantic sub-civilisation
