Friends, bad news. Got as far as O’Hare today, and had to turn around. Had to cancel GaryCon trip. My father was admitted to the ICU, already on hospice care and going fast. Don’t mean to dump this on you all, just might be in and out for awhile, though some time here might help distract me too.

I gave my thoughts on the survey, but I'll expand upon them fully here. Please, sincerely, listen to what I have to say. You asked, and I want to give you my honest thoughts and suggestions because I WANT you to get back to the success you once enjoyed, the community that once looked to you with excitement, not scathing sarcasm and hatred. You're probably sick of hearing this by now, but it must be said if you are to right this ship. You must fire the political activist amongst your ranks. (That's not a demand, it's a recommendation as you asked for.) I can understand you may have thought it was necessary at the time, but it's only hurt your core audience, your base. These people among you don't believe in escapism, the essence of fantasy. Everything must reflect the real world to them, and repudiate the "systemic prejudices and injustices." Everything is a grievance that must be paid for in reparations. Your output has told us in neon lettering that those who are not on board with modern political agendas surrounding identity categories like race, gender, and sexuality, and want to play in worlds where those aren't being considered, at least not as direct parallels to reality, are not welcome. The kicker is that these people as customers don't purchase to the degree that the die-hard fans do. You've seen the drops in sales from the 2024 update that you now call 5.5 edition. There's a reason for that; 2014 was before "the rot" set in. Many people are just tired of hearing these topics reflected in a hobby we use to get away from those conversations. If your argument back would be that those conversations deserve to be had, well, not by you all. Again, don't listen to the activists. You're game designers and curators of magical adventures. Your responsibility to the world is as individuals, not as WOTC. Another big part of that is the addition of what you call "safety rules." I have a copy of the Book of Exalted Deeds. It's my favorite D&D book of all time. On the cover, there's a worn sticker that says "WARNING! Content is intended for mature audiences only." The introduction of the book includes this passage: "We're relying on you to deal with your own reactions to this material in a mature manner." What happened to that? The trust that players didn't need to be walked through trigger warnings and sensitivity courses as long as they were warned ahead of time that a book's contents weren't intended for younger players? All this to say, D&D has never been a game or hobby without its controversies or problems. But we stuck with you because we assumed that you were on the same page as us, interested in providing the systems and settings for us to play around in and buy from you. Now? It appears that you've hooked onto a fad. Which, again, D&D has a history of. Monks exist in the game because Bruce Lee and Kung Fu films were big at the time. The Way of the Four Elements came from Avatar: the Last Airbender, and the Astral Self from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Hell, the whole game came originally from Lord of the Rings to the point that the Tolkien estate got involved. (Rangers, Halflings, Ents, etc.) That trend-chasing allowed those concepts to adapt into holistic parts of the D&D canon apart from their inspirations. However, the fad you've been chasing now wasn't fictional and fantastical to add new concepts to your fantasy cosmology. It was sociological demands imposed upon the assumptions of the game's fiction from people claiming "intersectionality." You've lost your way. It's not impossible to get it back. Still, you're all gonna have to eat some crow, accept that you're gonna get pushback from people who will baselessly call you "bigots" for not making rules for same-sex coupling, and embrace that your base players and audience will pay you back with loyalty, purchases, and support far more than those demographics you were trying to get. Heed this advice, Reject modernity. Embrace tradition.

Another game I had wanted to play, but some of these old “book case games” are hard to find people to play.

@RPG_GM02 That's a great idea. Wish we were campaigning in Mystara. Got new players at YMCA so it's our 1st game and I need to charm them. There's also the wonders of Castle Amber!

@ExeterSlayers I never have. I've lifted portions of it but just went with B/X stats for Boldavia in Glantri

@silverlock I like a d6 system. I imagine character creation and mechanics are simple. Also reminds me of SPIs Mordor and Gondor games.

@ExeterSlayers I never got the chance to play, but it is a Avalon hill game. It uses 2d6 dice. Utilizes scenarios to pit humans vs Skinny’s (a humanoid alien) or the bugs that live underground.

@EricPrice918 Snap. Playing with a new group soon, and will expose them to simplicity of B/X system. Thought Ravenloft might be an interesting adventure for them to experience. Replacing 'gypsy' with bandits. Either that or go through X2 Castle Amber and update it.

@YoDanno @BlackDragonCan I love this game. The boxed SJ Games are really special part of the 80s - Illuminati, Kung Fu 2001, Necromancer, One Page Bulge, Car Wars, Ogre. All sublime

So I had an idea, gonna pack this to take with me to Gary Con. Thought it would be perfect to put together a quick off books game with friends. Any other Undead fans out there? Or any other Steve Jackson micro games?

I've noticed that B/X is starting to get lost in the shuffle. A few reasons: it kept getting remade by the "OSR" year after year (market bloat), it was endlessly glazed by D&D Youtubers during this time leading to fatigue, and now a well deserved resurgence in OD&D/Chainmail and AD&D has made it seem like old hat. But, endless rehashes aside, the original Moldvay D&D is still a fun, solid game worthy of your shelf space despite its slowly waning audience. (Just try out Holmes D&D when you get the time, and don't forget about the Rules Cyclopedia too). #dnd

@AeresChronicles I use exactly the Moldvay/Cook rules for new players in their 20s. They'll experience something quite different but equally enjoyable to other systems they've become used to. First game 26th this month.
