One company plans to supply more than 10% of Europe's grid-battery market from two plants in southern Italy. Eni broke ground on Monday on a lithium-iron-phosphate plant in Brindisi, inside a decommissioned petrochemical site. Europe's first battery wave collapsed with Northvolt, and the second is arriving with owners of a different kind, industrial groups converting sites they already hold. Paired with Seri Industrial's Teverola plant, the target is 16 GWh of cells a year by 2030. The second phase adds cathode production and recycling on the same site.

This month the Energy Secretary approved his third large solar farm in a fortnight, one of them on prime farmland across Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire that his own inspectors told him to refuse. The soil beneath them, some of the finest in the country, sits in the dark for forty years quietly learning to be a car park. And it doesn't come back. Not in your lifetime. They are making a permanent decision about a temporary energy fashion, on ground you cannot un-glass, against the written advice of the men they pay to give it, in the same fortnight the same government swears food security keeps it awake at night. Sunniest idea they've had all year.
