This 31-year-old chronic ethanol user was handed over to me in the ICU as "Alcoholic Hepatitis." On the surface, the history made sense, but as soon as I stood at the bedside, something felt off. It wasn’t just the deep, mustard-yellow jaundice that caught my eye; it was the striking, fiery redness of his eyes, a classic conjunctival suffusion that looked like bright red ink spilled over a yellow canvas. (Even more red than the image attached) When I pulled up his labs, the "Alcoholic Hepatitis" narrative began to crumble. His total bilirubin (Direct) was a staggering 30 mg/dL, yet his AST and ALT were sitting comfortably within the normal range. In the world of alcoholic liver disease, that kind of dissociation is almost unheard of. To make matters worse, his kidneys were failing fast, with a Creatinine of 9.6 mg/dL. I suspected Weil’s Syndrome (Leptospirosis)...the rare but classic triad of jaundice, renal failure, and hemorrhage often contracted through contact with water contaminated by rat or dog urine. We pivoted immediately, bypassing the standard liver protocols to start targeted treatment for Lepto. Today, the confirmation came back: Leptospira IgM positive. The patient is already improving drastically. It’s a powerful reminder to always keep your mind open. If you approach a patient with a pre-settled diagnosis, you become blind to the evidence right in front of you. Don't let a label like "alcoholic" force you into a box, or you will miss the real diagnosis every single time

Pope Leo XIV is not ‘woke’, nor a Marxist, nor a progressive, nor a leftist. The Pope is simply a Christian. When he defends the poor and the innocent, he is following the Gospel. When he denounces injustice, he is imitating Christ. When he speaks for the poor, he is repeating word for word the Sermon on the Mount. Those who are angry at him are not fighting with Pope Leo XIV. They are fighting with Christ. Because it was Jesus who said: ‘Whatever you did for the least of my brothers, you did for me.’ Rejecting the Pope for being merciful is not something a Christian does. The problem is not that Leo XIV has strayed from Christ. The problem is that some have strayed so far from the Gospel that they no longer recognize it when they see it.
