@David_desJ @AstroJake @AlexHeffron20 1) Clearly they've already had this if they've led research during undergrad 2) this is also available to postdocs! It's not like suddenly you work in a bubble with nothing available to you post PhD

@David_desJ @AstroJake @AlexHeffron20 Does that make the PhD certificate more valuable? All these things are really just a never ending series of worthless pieces of paper, why go through the rigamarole if you've already proved your worth before you start?

@David_desJ @AstroJake @AlexHeffron20 The idea that postdocs are totally independent is nonsense, I work a lot more collaboratively (and learn a lot from that!) then I did as a PhD student. I'd be happy to hear the argument that a PhD gives you a better chance to build up a collaborative network than undergrad, tho

@David_desJ @AstroJake @AlexHeffron20 Agree with Jake here, a PhD should be awarded as a measure that someone has performed original research. If they have a/multiple first author papers then that's been met. Let them tape it into a thesis, do a viva and then get into the postdoc market
