Schools: less administrators, focus on teacher to student ratio. homeless/housing: focus on three things: drugs and mental health issues on the street can't be tolerated. Vouchers for teachers, fire fighters, and police so they can live in the cities they serve. Make it easy to build and make money from apartments (versus crazy regulations). Pass laws to stop the lawyers from profiting by suing cities, counties, and states into oblivion. Support businesses. That would be a fine start.

Brian, I'll ask you the question that I've asked every entrepreneur that has expressed concern about our fiscal situation in Seattle/WA: What would you do differently? Where would you cut from? Do you know how much of the budget is admin vs. say Education (K-12 is constitutionally mandated to be funded). Having friends on both the policy and startup side, my number one observation is that they are both shaking fists at each other, but no one is actually having a thoughtful conversation about the sacrifices both sides have to make. So again, you are a bright guy (I don't mean that facetiously). What would you do different?

Seattle is the best. We love it. We are scared sh-tless about it, though, because there are all sorts of people who moved here in the last 15 years who think they know why it is so great, but don't know how we got here. They are correct that it is geographically perfect, has loving citizens who want all our neighbors to do well, and will invest in schools, parks, libraries, and reasonable transit. They do not know at all that we can do this well because we have been a low tax environment that let this weird corner of the country punch WAY above it's weight because we helped many businesses grow like Microsoft, Amazon, Costco, Starbucks, Nordstrom's, many startups -- and that created opportunity for our kids. You are not owed the opportunity to live here and live on our parents and grandparents' investment and work. these newbies just think this is all manifest destiny and are pissing it away. they didn't make a damned thing, are mostly interlopers (see Seattle mayor), sometimes are lawyers (who can be great, see Gates family, or terrible, see Governor Ferguson) and now think they can redistribute wealth without creating new opportunity. We seriously are at a really risk of becoming economically the equivalent of the third generation of kids who no longer know how to make business and opportunity.

Agree that the Pac NW is among the more underachieving "squares" relative to it's underlying geographic advantages but it's also quite remote. Also Seattle is like the most beautiful city in the world 30% of the time but one of the cloudiest places in the world the other 70%.

@IsForAt Very difficult (probably impossible) to be a low-tax haven and world-class big city.

See this. Don't make excuses for inability to think about customers first (collectively, in Google's case - they think they are individually right and are screwing developers collectively with future rug pulls, deprecations, and lack of seriousness. The only place I trust there is Google cloud, and that's only what that team really controls which is not much in this arena).
Brian Hall@IsForAt

@BlytheWhisper @joshwoodward @OfficialLoganK No, this is just sad inability to make decisions for customers before internal teams. I can attest.

This has been one of the most pleasant starts to July in years! And it looks to continue for the next week. Not hot, not cold—just right. A certain girl who befriended bears 🐻would be impressed.

Seriously. I've been sued by Amazon because they didn't want me to work at Google, and there wasn't a single file, picture, email anything I had taken - and that made it so much easier. Also, it's not just about the law - don't cheat. We all know ndas and not taking information is just the right way to complete. Cheating is for losers and should get worked over hard.

As someone who knows a thing or two about departing Apple and ensuing dramas: 1. When the shit hits the fan or you know you're going to a rival, you shut your laptop 2. Don't touch it again, for any reason 3. Formally give it back keeping every receipt possible There, now nothing shows up in double-spaced Times New Roman documents like this one. It's incredible how many very smart tech people, who know how computers work, utterly footgun themselves on the dismount.

Major allegations about an Apple employee who joined OpenAI in Jan 2026, kept a laptop, found an exploit in Apple's systems and stole files over a multi-week time. This is similar to what Anthony Levandowski was accused of doing by Google back in 2018

Sorry, this is too easy, but I say it with love for you my friends at Google... especially @joshwoodward and @OfficialLoganK it is absurdly confusing how to build with Gemini or Google. I say this with love as I couldn't explain it when I worked with you! Do I get the Gemini App and build? Do I go to AI Studio? Do I go to whatever people called the thing you bought windsurf or what? don't forget that the most important builders aren't hobbyists and are working at companies and have infrastructure and don't know what to do with Vertex or Gemini Agent builder or whatever these things are called now. What is the app builder for Gemini? google.com/search?q=what+… Google Search: "how do I build apps with Gemini" returns this support page (after I scroll below the ads for base44, lovable, cybernews whatever that is): support.google.com/appsheet/answe… I want to just know how to build an app, and the understand how to do it with more opinion. start there please! I love you all - and want to build with Google - but you are not telling me at all how to build with Google. that's the thing you need to answer. for me as a person, me as a business builder, adn me as an employee in a company.
Josh Woodward@joshwoodward

What's something that you're surprised @GeminiApp can't do well, and we should have fixed a long time ago?

@jeremy_daly I'm just confused as to "half stoned Matthew McConaughey" - is that more or less understandable than usual? More precision please Jeremy...

I tried this yesterday and it was one of the most awkward conversations I've ever had. Weirdly timed acknowledgements while you're speaking ("uh huh"s), creepy giggles where there shouldn't be, and a conversation style that felt like talking to a half-stoned Matthew McConaughey.
