"We want water! We want water!"
Translating Falasteen (Palestine)@translatingpal

Palestinians in the southern governorates of the Gaza Strip staged a protest demanding immediate intervention from international organisations to secure water, as a severe thirst crisis deepens across displacement camps. "We want water! We want water!" the crowd chants, before Dr. Kamal al-Sheikh Ali, director of the displacement camps in Rafah, addresses the camera to spell out the scale of the disaster. He explains that Rafah governorate alone hosts 181 camps sheltering roughly 200,000 displaced Palestinians, while the entire population receives only 2,500 cubic metres of water per day, split between 1,500 from the Red Cross and 1,000 from the Palestinian Water Authority. The wider picture across Gaza is bleaker still: the strip's water system, which once supplied around 100,000 cubic metres a day, has collapsed to just 35,000, with per capita availability dropping from 80 litres per person per day before the genocide to less than 10 litres now, and at times as low as 2 litres, far below the global humanitarian minimum of 50 to 100 litres. Over 96% of Gaza's water is unfit for human consumption, more than 1,675 kilometres of the strip's 4,800-kilometre water and sanitation network have been destroyed by the Israeli occupation army, and 93% of households face water insecurity. Dr. al-Sheikh Ali calls on the International Red Cross, UNICEF, the Water Authority, and the United Nations to intervene immediately, warning that without a swift response, the displaced will face a catastrophe with dire consequences. The crisis is a direct result of the Israeli occupation's systematic destruction of Gaza's water infrastructure and its continued restrictions on the entry of fuel, equipment, and supplies needed to operate wells and desalination plants. mhmadalshaer11 (IG)

The @NBA is suddenly changing course. For 75 years, NBA players and coaches have stood up against injustice. But today, the NBA has a $300M sponsorship with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE also sponsors a genocidal militia in Sudan with weapons & drones that kill civilians. The NBA made the wrong call. End the @emirates deal. Learn more and act now: bloodontheball.org

This guy handled Middle East policy for four administrations of both parties. The embodiment of an incompetent and corrupt bipartisan foreign policy cartel that needs to be dismantled.

Biden's Middle East advisor suggests that America's war with Iran was unavoidable In a conversation with the American Jewish Committee, Brett McGurk, who was the Biden White House's top Middle East official, was asked: Was this war inevitable or was it avoidable? His answer reveals surprising overlaps between how Biden and Trump national security leaders see Iran and the Middle East. "We've been at war with Iran since 1979, and the Iranian ideology, which remains very much intact, is to get the US out of the Middle East and to eliminate Israel," McGurk says. "And as the White House point person through that [post-Oct. 7] crisis, let me just kind of very succinctly, what a day was like. Put aside the horror of Gaza and the hostages and everything going on there for a moment. "We’re under attack in the Red Sea. Anti-ship ballistic missiles flying Mach 4 trying to hit US ships and kill dozens of sailors. We're under attack in Iraq. We took a grievously wounded casualty on Christmas Day 2023 and attacks continued to escalate until we have three Americans dead in Jordan at the end of January. "Iran launched two of the largest ballistic missile attacks in history against Israel before Israel ever attacked into Iran, and all the while Iran is enriching uranium in Fordow to 60% grade as this is all going on. "I met the Iranians in Oman during this crisis. I dealt with it every day. And what Iran was doing to continue to escalate throughout that horror that was going on in the Middle East is a story that I don't think has been effectively, frankly, told. "But it gets to your question. You can dissect decisions of certain American presidents from Carter all the way through Trump. You can dissect American decision-making. You have to look at what Iran does, its policy and what it does in the region which drives so much of this mayhem. And I can criticize certain elements of the way this current campaign has been prosecuted. I think we're in a very difficult predicament now which we can talk about. "But the core of your question was this war — this war has been ongoing since 1979."

Every step of the way, Iran has played their hand to perfection. Strategic. Methodical. Calculated. The United States, in contrast, has been ill-prepared, scrambling, and behind the curve. Nowhere is this more clear than the recent US strikes and hour ago on an Iranian vessel near Kharg Island with a Hellfire missile, followed subsequently by immediate retaliation from Iran on US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain. What we see taking place here is a United States that knows they are boxed in. They have no military options that would have even a moderate likelihood of success, so now they are hoping... praying, that Iran does not have the capabilities or willingness to resume to war. This is the window the United States hopes to take advantage of. If Iran, a country that is battered and bruised, yet still standing, is unwilling or incapable of returning to war, the United States gains immediate leverage at the negotiating table. This means that the US can continuously make probing and strategic strikes at Iran without a fear of retaliation. Iran knows this, and they are responding the same way they have done throughout the entire war. Strategic. Methodical. Calculated. Throughout this "hot ceasefire", we have seen the United States continually throw jabs at Iran. No haymakers, nothing overly significant, but enough that Iran has to either respond, or allow for them to continue. And this is exactly what they did when they struck targets in Kuwait and Bahrain. In response to the early probing strikes from the United States, Iran has responded in a very much "tit for tat" manner. You strike me, I strike you only to the level in which the pain is equated. But here's the problem... the United States can play that game. All day long baby. So now, we see Iran turning to a slightly different tactic. 150%. Under this strategy, Iran seeks to respond in a manner that is meant to deter future probing strikes, jabs, from the United States. But this is a tricky line to walk... Under-escalate, and you guarantee future strikes. Over-escalate, and you could see a full resumption of the war. But Iran, as they have throughout the war, continues to play as if they have been preparing for this exact scenario for 47 years... because they have. Instead of over-escalating by closing down the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, or targeting Gulf energy infrastructure, or lashing out at civilian vessels in the Strait, they take the perfectly proportionate step. The problem now for the United States, is that their probing strategy has now backfired. Iran has shown, by striking these targets in Bahrain and Kuwait, that they are not only WILLING to go back to a hot war... they are capable of doing so EFFECTIVELY. A move from Washington meant to increase US leverage at the negotiating table by seeing Iran back down, and has produced the exact opposite effects. Iran is emboldened. They're willing. And most damning of all... they're capable.

Drop Site News was scheduled to host a panel discussion at SXSW London on June 3. We have informed the organizers we will not be moving forward with the event following SXSW’s refusal to condemn the British Home Office’s state censorship of our colleagues Hasan Piker and Cenk Uygur, who were also scheduled to speak at SXSW. The banning of our colleagues is part of an intensifying campaign by the UK government to stifle criticism of Israel and criminalize pro-Palestine activism at a time when the genocide in Gaza is continuing.

Sometimes, you don’t hate the bias of the editors at the New York Times enough. The reporters rightly relegated this guilt-by-association cleric stuff to the 9th paragraph of their piece but the editor made sure it in was the dek of the piece itself on this historic night - above any mention of him treating 9/11 victims, saving Tammy Duckworth’s life, or volunteering to save lives in Gaza.
