Contemplating 2 Davids: One Renaissance and one Baroque masterpiece. Which do you prefer?
In Michelangelo's Renaissance version (c. 1501), we see the MIND of David. He is reserved, calm, thoughtful and idealized. Perhaps more beautiful, but not situationally realistic, as that wasn't the point.
In Bernini's Baroque version (c. 1623), we see ACTION. David's body is contorted, and agitated concentration shows on his face. It is emotionally direct and situationally realistic.
Both perfectly reflect the eras they belong to: The art of the Renaissance, which targeted the intellect, and the art of the Baroque, which targeted the feelings.
