Another delegate (black woman) who spoke earlier on Day One, expressed frustration that the "equity card"—or "cards" in this case—did not fully recognize her intersectionality. A disabled woman (wheelchair) presented a similar challenge.
I am curious to see how they manage this.

HAPPENING NOW: Thus ends Day One of the 2026 NDP leadership election convention. The party delegates' primary concern — up to the very last speaker — remained the "equity cards." I am excited to see what modifications are made to the system and how this unfolds on Day Two.

For the umpteenth time, I voted for law and order after being lied to that it was a request from law enforcement. The legislation didn’t say the Trudeau govt would unconstitutionally freeze bank accounts. I didn’t vote for that. The Convoy had every right to protest, but peaceful assembly became occupation when they parked and stayed there, no matter how inane and peaceful it was (e.g. bouncy castle and hot tub). I’m glad the overreach has been challenged in court. And had I known it would be abused and exploited in this way, I absolutely would not have voted for it and have said as much, including just a few weeks ago on air with @bradcsmith on @am640. I’m human, people make mistakes, but I voted with the best information I had at the time, which as an independent is limited so I trusted that the government acted in good faith and believed that on a matter as serious as this they’d put partisanship aside. I was wrong, I own this, and I will forever regret voting for the EA for the rest of my life.

Today, during an exchange with a witness at the Standing Committee on Industry and Technology, I asked questions that inadvertently came across as dismissive of the serious issue of forced labour. To be clear, my line of questioning referred to auto manufacturing in Shenzhen, China, and not in Xinjiang. I regret this mistake and apologise to Ms. McCuaig-Johnston and my fellow committee members. I condemn forced labour, in all its forms. Canada has amongst the most rigorous forced-labour import laws in the world, and I am proud to support the government’s work to eradicate forced labour from supply chains and enforce Canada’s import prohibition.
