Hey man every democrat in leadership since 08 has run on moving right to appeal to these voters. How did that work out? At some point you dishonest cranks need to reckon with who controls the dem party and what their policy / strategy has been (yours! Exactly!)
Swann Marcus@SwannMarcus89

The massive Democratic majority in 2008 existed because Obama did shit like win a majority of Tennessee’s House seats Tennesseans thought Obama’s policies were too left-wing so they never voted Democratic again and socialists think this means he should have been more left-wing

@bdquinn Republicans have indeed moved so far right that their own proposed policies are no longer acceptable to them. This doesn't disprove that in 2009 Obama fought very hard to implement the Republicans' own plan

Definitely getting a lot of "The ACA was just Romneycare, so it was a Republican policy" from people. I encourage people to take a look and see if any Republican trifecta states implemented anything like Romneycare. That's right, none did and none ever would have, either.
Sir Humphrey 🇺🇦@bdquinn

Arguing that Republicans would've passed the ACA, ARRA, Dodd-Frank, etc is certainly a thing you can say. One of my main problems with leftists is that they just lie... a lot.

@Gravtum @SVcrazycatlady What do you think politics is? I can't name a single party that achieved part of its agenda then packed up and went home. Demands are the entire thing!

@theslothsays222 @bdquinn A lot of democrats work to defund social programs to balance the budget. See Clinton's welfare reform bill. Republicans do it more often and more harshly but a left wing critique is totally valid when Democrats run on 70s Republican austerity policies.

@MattyBeRad @bdquinn Democrats in many ways are more fiscally conservative if by conservative you mean reducing deficits. Generally, Democrats try to pay for their policies by raising taxes. Republicans just cut taxes and do nothing.

@edwardelrich82 @bdquinn I could again ask you who initially proposed the ACA as a "solution" but set that aside. Whether Obama's majority was conservative is a separate question from whether Democrats support conservative policies. Many democrats are desperate to convince the public that they do!

@edwardelrich82 @bdquinn You've fallen for a completely dishonest framing. No serious leftist thinks republicans and democrats are the same. Many serious leftists correctly point out democrats support conservative policies. Those are different things!

@MattyBeRad @bdquinn This feels like a “no true Scotsman” kinda fallacy but to the OP’s point look at what republicans pass and why democrats pass and the dems are closer to you but since it’s not exactly why you want its the same thing…it’s dishonest

@user143455 @bdquinn Yes everyone online does this and they're all wrong to. My critique wasn't sincerely that only liberals do this, it's that this guy is doing it and that's dumb and wrong.

@MattyBeRad @bdquinn Ah yes because leftists would never do something like that. Leftists would never spend countless hours dunking on random people. Like you know if you made a sign at a protest that leftists didn’t like,

@bdquinn And of course Biden's Gaza policy was genocidally pro Israel. You've ellided the correct point (dems often do conservative policy) with the incorrect point (dems and Republicans are the same) and pretended the left only ever argued the latter.

@bdquinn The democratic party objectively does implement small c conservative policies. Many democrats actively run on the argument that they're the real fiscal conservatives! Clinton's welfare reform was a deeply conservative policy. Obama's ACA was fired proposed by a con think tank!

What a lot of Americans cheering on the Greens don’t understand is that the leadership of the UK Greens is stupid. I don’t mean this as a value judgement. They are genuinely unintelligent. The gap between them and AOC or Mamdani is a chasm.

@mattyglesias I don't actually believe you're sincere is the problem, mainly because you use public opinion as a backwards looking justification of your beliefs rather than changing your positions to match public opinion.

People find this to be very strange, but I sincerely believe that Donald Trump is extremely bad and that the most important thing in American politics is to defeat him and his movement which means the opposition party should try to take more popular stands.
Cole Sandick🌹🇵🇸🇺🇦🇸🇩@ColeSandick

For all my many complaints about Yglesias I genuinely think most leftists underestimate the extent of his sincerity. He’s a True Believer in popularist centrism in a way that most of his dumber and more intransigent centrist peers aren’t, a strange chaotic neutral contrarianism.

It's just pablum to insist the left does nothing but criticize. It's a very convenient framing It only suffers the unfortunate handicap of being false.

Generally liberals like this have never interacted with a leftist offline and therefore don't understand our concrete actions. I think no kings is fine but also most of my leftist friends are actively organizing in labor, housing, or electoral.
Max@maxtmcc

There’s criticism toward No Kings for demanding “nothing concrete.” I disagree; they demand that Americans vote Republicans out of office, and I guarantee every attendee of No Kings will show up to do just that. By contrast, what, *concretely*, does the revolutionary left demand?

@Vibutler_ @dontgoslideaway it is possible to subvert democracy without literally removing peoples' right to vote. The proof that our democracy has been subverted is comparing the support for israel and singlepayer healthcare between dem voters and dem leadership.

@mattyglesias Why do you think it is moderate democrats have had so much difficulty criticizing Israel despite it being morally and politically correct? Perhaps the center has a deeper problem than messaging

As someone who absolutely fears the left's growing power, I think the smart play is for moderate Dems to go on Piker's show and agree with him that Israel is bad and then stick to their guns on other moderate stuff.
Matt Duss@mattduss

Hasan isn’t driving a wedge into the party, the failed, repeatedly discredited yet unfortunately still entrenched corporate wing of the party is. They fear the left’s growing power and see Hasan as a way to make us argue amongst ourselves. We shouldn’t fall for it.

What benefit do the wealthiest and most populous states gain from loyalty to this national government? From loyalty to a system where their people are doomed to be governed by a smaller population in less educated states governed by the far right?
Jeremiah Johnson 🌐@JeremiahDJohns

I know it's boring and repetitive to talk about how grossly evil Trump is, but the fact remains: Trump is grossly evil, in a way that's pretty much unprecedented in this country.

1) I think people in this online echo chamber majorly overestimate how much normal people/Michiganders know and care about Hasan Piker. 2) I’ve had major issues with some things he’s said, but IMO he’s not in the same realm as Nick Fuentes. 3) This pivot from McMorrow seems like a strategic bet that Stevens voters are more gettable than El-Sayed voters, and maybe that more undecideds are deciding between McMorrow and Stevens. And that she was never going to outflank Abdul on being progressive or on Israel-Gaza — essentially conceding the left lane and trying to chart a Goldilocks path to the nomination. 4) Whether intentional or not, I think this will make it more likely that AIPAC will turn their fire on El-Sayed alone, rather than both McMorrow and El-Sayed (which seemed to be their plan before).
Politics & Poll Tracker 📡@PollTracker2024

Mallory McMorrow on Hasan Piker in interview with the Jewish Insider: “It is somebody who says extremely offensive things in order to generate clicks and views and followers, which is not entirely different from somebody like Nick Fuentes.” “Pikar is a provocateur, to put it lightly, who says things that are misogynistic and antisemitic, and said that the United States deserved 9/11.” McMorrow is seeking the Democratic nomination for US Senate in Michigan
