⚖️ "Consumers deserve representation in any hearing involving the future legal status of marijuana." NORML is telling the DEA that cannabis consumers cannot be excluded from one of the biggest federal marijuana policy debates in decades. 🔗 Read more: norml.org/blog/2026/05/2…

🚨 Broad bipartisan support for a regulated retail cannabis market has been remarkably consistent for years, and her vetoes place Governor Spanberger firmly on the wrong side of both public opinion and public safety. Virginians can already see the consequences of the failed approach embraced by Republican former Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who also vetoed regulated sales in favor of allowing an unregulated THC market to explode across the Commonwealth. Voters understand that preserving this unregulated market is not a serious public safety strategy. marijuanamoment.net/virginia-gover…

🇺🇸 The House once again approved language allowing VA doctors to recommend medical cannabis. Veterans advocates have spent years pushing Congress to stop denying former service members access to medical cannabis through the VA healthcare system. Similar language has failed to make it into previous final spending bills, so advocates are watching closely. 🔗 Read more: norml.org/blog/2026/05/2…

🧪🌿 The Department of Transportation made it clear that rescheduling medical cannabis won’t exempt workers from drug testing policies that were written for prohibition-era marijuana laws. In a new memo, the DOT says the pending rescheduling order "does not authorize" employees in federally regulated safety-sensitive positions to use medical cannabis under federal drug testing rules. 🔗 Read more: norml.org/blog/2026/05/1…

🌿 Yes, rescheduling medical cannabis is progress, but the move still leaves millions of responsible consumers vulnerable to criminal penalties, discrimination, and the continued denial of their constitutional rights. NORML has long maintained that marijuana must be descheduled and removed from the Controlled Substances Act entirely. 🔗 Read more: norml.org/blog/2026/05/1…

❌ "Governor @GovernorVA @SpanbergerForVA's veto is a profound disappointment to the many Virginia voters who believed her when she said on the campaign trail that she supported establishing a regulated adult-use cannabis market. It is also a slap in the face to the years of serious work undertaken by lawmakers, policy experts, advocates, public health stakeholders, and regulators who spent more than half a decade researching, debating, and carefully crafting this legislation." 🔗Read more: norml.org/blog/2026/05/1…

@ssurovell @lashrecseaird The kingpin penalty wasn’t the dealbreaker, it was the repeal of bipartisan decriminalization laws passed way back in 2020. It’s almost like a return to putting Black, Brown, poor, and young Virginians in handcuffs for a legal substance was a nonstarter for too many legislators.

@LegislativeAI @Jaaavis She actively chose not to involve herself in the legislative process. The GA asked for her priority bills+ input and her office was largely silent. Then she dropped a bunch of amendments after negotiations were done & got mad when the GA told her 'no, that's not how this works'

There is a lot of theorizing and people trying to understand why the governor vetoed so many Democrat-sponsored bills. A lot of people think it’s a power dynamic move after the legislators tried to bully her with certain things this year. That could be true. But it doesn’t completely make sense that she would use bills that would and did anger the base, instead of choosing bills that might anger the patron, but go by fairly unnoticed with the public.

Smart Approaches to Marijuana, an anti-cannabis group, is currently using its money (which mainly comes from individual donors, they say) to advertise Kevin Sabet's podcast on here. Not sure that's the best use of funds...

@NickMinock They like the illegal marijuana laundered as 2018 Farm Bill hemp in smoke and vape shops. Hence why they don’t want to legalize regulated adult-use cannabis sales — it would eliminate that grey hemp marijuana market.

🚨'Hives of corruption': Fairfax County police chief takes aim at vape shops after drug bust Police say they’ve broken up a large-scale drug trafficking organization operating out of vape shops in Northern Virginia. So far, the bust has led to three arrests, and calls to get vape shops under control. #SmokeShopGate $MSOS

🚨 An anti-marijuana group and a drug testing trade organization are suing the federal government to block the proposed rescheduling of medical cannabis, arguing that the Attorney General lacks the authority under the Controlled Substances Act to move marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III. Considering these groups profit from keeping marijuana criminalized, it's no surprise they're fighting desperately to keep consumers in handcuffs. 🔗 Read more: norml.org/news/2026/05/0…

✅ For years, Virginians have remained behind bars for marijuana even after legalization became law. @GovernorVA @SpanbergerForVA called these newly signed resentencing measures "an issue of fairness and justice." Virginians will now see whether that same commitment extends to signing the adult-use retail sales bills. 🔗 Read more: norml.org/blog/2026/05/1…

HB26 has FINALLY been signed into law! Virginians serving time for marijuana offenses no longer treated as crimes now have a path home. Years of hard work from former patrons and advocates, but we got the job done!
