Did you know that from the early 1500s onward, Muslim privateers and pirates based in North Africa raided European coastal towns and ships in the Mediterranean and Atlantic, capturing people to sell as slaves? Historians estimate that between 1530 and 1780 alone, they enslaved roughly 1 to 1.25 million Europeans. Captives were typically forced into galley slavery, domestic labor, or concubinage. Women and girls were frequently taken as sexual slaves or concubines in North African households and harems. Their raids extended far beyond the Mediterranean: they attacked villages in England, Ireland, and even reached Iceland l, and on rare occasions, the coasts of North America. This systematic slave trade continued for over two centuries until European and American naval campaigns in the early 19th century finally suppressed it.
