@Eisenhagel Lincoln certainly bent the constitution in order to win the war. But at the time being referenced he wasn’t even in office yet.

@Ohboycjs And a direct threat to the Constitutional rights of states within the Union, correct - the bigger issue, all in all.

@realindridcold @izamamaa The southern ports that were bringing in what, 10-15% of total federal revenue?Completely delusional. The south succeeded because they viewed Lincoln’s election as a direct threat to the institution of slavery.

@izamamaa Quite the contrary. It's the universal symbol for rebellion, and the South just wanted to be left alone. Lincoln responded by raising an army of mostly mercenaries, and murdered almost 1 million Americans over secession so he could collect tariffs on Southern ports.

@Recondo886 @izamamaa When exactly could he have taken DC? And don’t say after either Bull Run because that’s a hilariously bad argument to try and make.

@izamamaa you failed US history class. the Confederacy never attempted to enter Washington DC mush less the Capital. Robert E Lee could have taken DC, twice. he probably should have.

@Ohboycjs @tbonier the court agreed only the legislature and commission can draw it. the legislature then voted to reject the bipartisan map and instead map their own drawing for congressional districts. banning it really worked there huh

@FieryPhoenix74 @tbonier You should tell the GOP congressional members that. They could ban it but they won’t, because they know they disproportionately benefit from it.

@tbonier Same could be said about democrats when CA did it. Anyone who thinks it’s ok to gerrymander a state for power is mentally challenged. I don’t care what side of the aisle you are on, you should be against gerrymandering. If your ok with it then don’t claim to be for fair elections

@keith_lundin69 @tbonier Both! That’s what they’re pointing out, that republicans are hypocrites who won’t ban gerrymandering because they benefit from it.

@tbonier We have a state constitution with an addendum for no gerrymandering. Texas doesn’t, that’s not my fault, genius!!! We have nothing to do with what happened in Texas.

@tbonier they were just following illinois lead where one fun feature is that it splits the chicago metro area up between 10 to 11 different congressional districts

I know a lot of Republicans are probably sad about their democracy being taken from them, but they should consider that we never had a democracy. It’s actually a Republic.

@DerekPederson3 Kind of blaming the victim here if you genuinely think gerrymandering is wrong. It benefits reps basically nowhere they massively lose out

Virginia voter: Trump has explicitly stated to state legislators, 'find me more seats.' As Democrats, we can't come to a boxing match where the other person brings a knife. That's the position we've been forced into

just a friendly reminder that republicans have a trifecta and could pass a federal ban on gerrymandering *tomorrow* if they wanted to. but they don’t want to. they want to rig the system. and then they turn around and throw a temper tantrum when Dems fight back

Graham Platner: “In 1990 there were fewer than 80 billionaires in the US. Today there are over 900. Do you see a state of Maine that is 10x wealthier than 1990? Have our wages gone up 10x? Do we have 10x the schools? 10x the hospitals? No, we have less. The money went somewhere and it wasn’t down here. it was stolen from us in a rigged system”

@Noybs2 @carolinapsycho1 @AndrewHilaryUS I’m saying you clearly haven’t read primary sources of the time. They saw Lincoln’s election as a threat to their way of life, which was defined by slavery. So in that sense, yes you don’t know anything. Or at the very least lack critical thinking skills
