@BCarfree More cars and larger cars demanding ever-more resources as “security blankets”, leaving the planet in their dust.

@ReadLyte They're not even cars anymore, they're ESVs (Emotional Support Vehicles) that are the size of living rooms. I guess people are dealing with the housing shortage by driving small houses.🙃

There were almost 1.5 billion cars in the world in 2023. Now there are about 1.65 billion cars in the world. More development in the wrong direction when sustainable redevelopment is required.
Myron Belej, RPP, MCIP@ReadLyte

@Point_of_Gold @Teoli2003 There are close to 1.5 billion cars in the world today. (No cars prior to 1886.) Let’s say that corresponds to around 6 billion tyres. Will we find sustainability in ongoing research to improve tyre content & wear? Or in redevelopment that makes most cars and tyres irrelevant?

In rural areas, some people were bothered by the smells of agriculture and farming. So now we have urban areas where people are bothered by the smells of garbage, pollution, chemicals, emissions, sewage gas, solvents, and off-gassing.

1.645 billion was estimated globally in September 2025, so the number may be even higher today. Adding cars also adds tires, roads, parking areas, service stations, infrastructure for fuelling and charging, and more. Redeveloping sustainably is better. hedgescompany.com/blog/2021/06/h…

Much of the development that led to ‘remarkable additions’ in air pollution should never have been authorized in the first place. Ensure the sustainable redevelopment that fixes it adds remarkably to nature, housing, green jobs, accessibility, local food and resilience as well.

"London, San Francisco & Beijing achieve ‘remarkable reductions’ in air pollution "Analysis found cycle lanes...EVs and restrictions on polluting vehicles had helped to drive the improvements" EVs, cycle lanes, ULEZ zones - they do actually work theguardian.com/environment/20…

@SDoxat Yes, sustainable architecture needs to replace and rebuild places contributing to excess pollution. The sooner, the better.

@ManOfKent15 Then transmission corridors are justified to connect the industrial power generation facilities (“farms”) to where the power is actually needed. Then batteries. Then more roads and infrastructure. Development keeps growing the industrial machine. Redevelopment replaces it.

A city has slums. Two options: bulldoze and move residents to new housing, or upgrade the slum where it stands. New housing sounds better. Chile tested both for 20 years. It wasn't even close.

If an organization puts the word ‘sustainable’ in their mission statement, does that automatically make the organization sustainable? Of course not. The main thing that differentiates sustainable organizations from unsustainable organizations is redevelopment.

At one protest, activists bring signs and megaphones, prepared to ask for policy change. In another city, citizens bring tools and equipment, prepared to complete sustainable redevelopment. Which group will achieve more change people can see?

Actually, sustainable redevelopment is the largest threat to those that control the flow of oil and gas, because it would lower demand for energy (while decentralising it) and private vehicles and global transport and fertilizer and refrigeration and plastic and and and…

@TheSolarShed Yep. Decentralised energy is the largest threat to those that control the flow of oil and gas.
