@mascord @francesweetman This is exactly what we have done with three boys. But the reality is that most adults are not on twitter and are technologically illiterate. They are also not interested in understanding the detail, so the idea you are going to educate them into sorting it out is for the birds.

It's not good news It's a backdoor way to introduce censorship and remove digital privacy How will I prove I'm not a child when using sm? I will need to prove my identity. Then the government will have access to anything I say on any platform How will I prove I'm not a child taking naked selfies? Is the government going to search through all the photos on my phone to make sure? I draw the line at this level of surveillance. I will literally not stay in the UK. I'm eligible for citizenship in another European country but I'm more likely to try my luck with a US visa

It is fantastic news that the Government has finally woken up to the dangers of social media for young people. This is an important step in helping parents protect childhood for children. Huge credit goes to @LauraTrottMP and my Shadow Cabinet for relentlessly fighting for this. Conservatives welcome this latest Labour U-turn, and will continue to work for the best implementation of the policy.

Poppy, you don’t know what you’re talking about. The youth mental health epidemic maps on perfectly to the rise of tech and social media. Screen-based childhoods are a disaster. People in 50 years will look back and think, What the hell were they doing? Smartphones are as dangerous as drugs for a child.

I suppose it’s too much to ask the Conservative Party to actually bother to look at the academic consensus on teenage social media use and mental health outcomes, which has found NO EVIDENCE the two are connected. Why bother with a silly little thing like the truth when such a golden opportunity to censor speech has presented itself?

It is ready to PASS IMMEDIATELY. It does what governments for the past 20 years didn’t – it takes RADICAL ACTION to SAVE OUR INDUSTRIES and GET BILLS DOWN. There’s no excuse. Last week, the US suspended access to some of the world’s leading frontier AI models. Britain is vulnerable - and our energy prices are strangling our national security. We cannot afford to be at the mercy of other countries or events beyond our control any longer. People will attack this policy, but after extensive government consultation, 90% of the parents of under-16s support it. They have watched social media consume huge portions of their children’s lives, so have a very different perspective. Social media amplifies narcissism, materialism, envy and division at an age when young minds are still developing. It keeps children trapped in a digital ecosystem designed to maximise engagement at the expense of real-world experiences, time outdoors, hobbies, independence, and learning how to socialise and build genuine friendships. Perhaps most damaging of all, it encourages constant comparison. Children are measuring themselves against carefully curated versions of other people’s lives every hour of every day. It creates feelings of inadequacy and anxiety on a scale that older generations simply never experienced. There will be much outrage about this, but this policy is truly about protecting children, and anyone who cares about the future of society should support it.

Over the moon that the Gvt has finally listened & u-turned. This victory belongs to the brave bereaved parents fighting to protect other people's children, the health professionals who spoke out, & the parents who made their voices heard. Together, we did not give up. Today is a huge step forward for protecting childhood & backing parents, so they do not have to fight big tech & screens alone.

There is simply no way to win. Better to remove it completely. My nature says to hate this, but this is not a normal liberal situation.
