Interesting elections in Europe. A right wing wave has swept the continent. Many countries sent right wing members to the European Parliament, taking control. Following suit, some countries elected right wing governments. However, let’s look at two major countries that broke from that trend and why: Labour (a left wing party) beat the conservatives for the first time in eons in the UK. But the more you look into it, the more you see Nigel Farage’s Reform party split votes with the Torries (both right wing) and handed it to Labour. It’s important to note their elections aren’t the same as ours. Together, Torries and Reform had enough votes to topple all opposition. Instead they find themselves both in deep minorities. Reform had over 4 million votes, but only won 1% of the parliament seats. Another 3rd party won 3.5 million votes and received 12% of the seats. The UKs election doesn’t have a “top two”, so to put it plainly it only matters how many of the 650 races you win. Takeaway: Labour didn’t fair much better than some of their previous big losses, but capitalized on rightwing infighting. Over in France, an even weirder election. The right wing party won a bunch of EU parliament races. In desperation, President Macron ordered a snap election. Yes, that’s a thing he can apparently do. Well, in round 1 the French people vote, and only those candidates who have a clear majority vote are declared winners. The close races go to round 2 for a runoff. Until today, it looked like the right wing party could win. However, the center left party led by Macron and the communists made a deal and dropped their 3rd place candidates from runoff races to join forces and beat the right wing party. Now, the commies have won, and they are asking Macron to step down (irony). It’s important to note that unless a party has a majority (none of them do) it casts their country into major gridlock. They must rely on forming coalitions, or minority governments to accomplish anything, or sit around and do mostly nothing. Takeaway: left wing coalitions who despise each other did what they thought was necessary to stop the right… no matter the cost. Republicans in WA can take a lesson from the takeaways of these two countries elections and the outcome. In 2012, I watched some Republicans say they would never vote McKenna, they had preferred a man named Sharam Hadian and vowed to write him in or skip the race. The result was a narrow McKenna loss and 12 straight years (including 975 days of emergency powers) of surviving Jay Inslee. In that span of time, the legislature went further to the left than it ever began. A dream for Democrats and a reward for their patience and practice of incrementalism. The open seat race for Governor will be tight. Even Bob knows it. He hopes the “I will never vote for Republican candidate X because they fail my purity test” folks are true to their word. It makes a big difference, as does getting swing voters to swing towards a republican candidate, in a race that could be within 1-2% difference. The question is, do you want 12 years of Bob Ferguson and an increasingly radically left legislature? If the answer to that is no, or even makes you a bit uneasy, you show up and vote for the Republican on the ballot, even if that candidate isn’t your favorite, and give your state a fighting chance at survival.

@Calico_Warrior No, I’m not part of that team but I probably should be. We are grateful for their service. My great uncle was shot down during World War II during a bombing run over Germany. He was only 22, I believe.
